Summer vacation in Rocky Mountain NP

We're in the process of getting reservations for a Tipi in a resort in Estes Park for the second week of June. I can't wait. We'll spend a week there, then return to TX, staying a few days at our favorite park on the way back to work on the tan!

I know a few of ya'll have recently been to RMNP and loved it. What are your top hike suggestions or other things we should do or see? There are mines and breweries to tour, trains to ride....

"campermom", you have seen my review from our trip two years ago, haven't you? Let me know if you haven't. Can't add more then that but may be able to add a bit more detail to specific questions. Let me know if you need a link to the reviews and if I can help more.

We're thinking about a return trip for the summer of '10 but haven decided yet. RMNP is a great place and I'd return anytime!

Campermom you are going to have such a great vacation! I grew up going to Colorado with my family almost every summer. I've been all over that beautiful state. I am hoping to be able to get back there with my husband and kids (who have never been) next summer. Sorry I can't help with hiking info but may be able to help with other areas. What do you all have planned to do while there?

Arrival is planned around supper on Monday 8th. 6 full days in Estes Park with Elk Meadow RV Resort as home base. Departure on Monday the 15th.

I did want to have an idea of a few things to go do if the weather wasn't great, but my intention is to spend a lot of time in the park.
One day trip is to drive 1 1/2 hours into Denver to visit the Denver Museum of Nature and Science ($17 for us both). Then to the US Mint, and Red Rocks Park in Morrison. For anyone who grew up in the MTV era, this is where U2 filmed a video for Sunday Bloody Sunday ( I think, memory fails sometimes).

In Georgetown there is a railroad and mine. It's 2 hours south of E.P. You can ride the train and visit the mine. This one isn't free, ($46.50 total for both of us). This would also be a full day trip.

Sunday the 14th there is a marathon going on through the streets of EP so we will most likely stay at the resort doing laundry, packing the truck and coolers for the journey back to hotter climes. There is a heated pool and hot tub there so it won't be a day filled of boring chores. Maybe a late afternoon trip back to the park.

What might be the most expensive part of the trip will be the camera batteries that I will be burning through.

Packing for this trip will be interesting. We'll need jeans, long sleeve shirts, jackets, and hiking boots for 6 days in Colorado. We'll need river shoes, bathing suits, shorts, and tank tops for traveling and 3 days in Junction, TX.

For day hikes, start with trekking to Alberta Falls. It's only a half mile walk from the trailhead with lots of people around but it's so scenic you shouldn't pass it up. To extend this hike, keep going past the falls to Mills Lake, a nice place for a picnic lunch.

I'm not sure what the trail is called, but a second hike encompasses three lakes (Nymph, Dream and Emerald Lakes)with each one progressively more scenic than the previous. This is also a good one in which to pack a lunch.
    And bring your camera.

    You're gonna love this park.
