spring break...too crazy/crowded??
hello all...we are looking to get back to camping now that the kids r a little older...also we r thinking of doing the RV route instead of tent camping for spring break...
question is how crowded/crazy will the west texas parks be during spring break?? the kids are off the mar13-17th week...ages are 8 and 4
we r looking to rent a small class c RV, but go primitive. we would like to be off the beaten path a little, no concrete etc...possible with an RV?? any advice??
some destinations options:
padre island--can we get away from the concrete sites?
big bend
davis
palo duro
any others to consider? maybe swing into NM?
thanks for the help

Re: spring break...too crazy/crowded??
I can't be tons of help either....But,,,I will bet Big Bend and Padre will be crowded. Call over to Palo Duro and ask?
Lots of nice places to see in Texas. Will try a bit harder when I get more time

Re: spring break...too crazy/crowded??
if you're brave and have a sturdy 4x4 to haul the RV, you can get away from crowds on PINS by driving down the beach past the hard pack. Big Bend will be very very crowded, but you can make reservations through reserveamerica.com. I was there during thanksgiving, and only 1 primitive site was available, and it was in the middle of the River Road. I'm sure Palo Duro gets a lot of Amarillo/Lubbock traffic. Most areas in NM that are pretty, ie. the mountains, will still have snow in the area, so take that into account.

Re: spring break...too crazy/crowded??
Something else to consider if you are thinking about one of the state parks are the new hours some parks are keeping. For more information, go to
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/newsmedi...ional_changes/
For example, Caprock Canyons is day use only from December 5 to March 2, It's worth checking before you set off to the wilds.

Re: spring break...too crazy/crowded??
thanks to all for the feedback...will look at some alternates, just in case...maybe head up to the panhandle then over into NM and stop at taos or angelfire if we have enough time, and they ever get any snow...will post back...enjoy the weekend and this great weather...bill

Re: spring break...too crazy/crowded??
Most of the state park websites list their busy seasons. I always try to go in winter time, way fewer crowds and better campfires

Re: spring break...too crazy/crowded??
South Padre Island will be extremely busy during this time. Avoid it like the plague! Padre Island NS (the north island) will be busy also, but this is mostly day-use traffic. The nights should be less crowded.
I've read many times that Big Bend NP is also busy over spring break. But...it is a HUGE park, so that may only be in reference to the more popular camping spots.

Re: spring break...too crazy/crowded??
The reservable sites will no doubt go fast and it appears that at this late date, one would be relegated to either the other CG's or roadside camping within the park.

Re: spring break...too crazy/crowded??
For Big Bend, you may want to view my discovver page. Big Bend is about 1/2 down. I list other RV camps and give links to virtual maps and big bend forum.
http://www.usaer.com/discover.htm
The national park is just one part of the Big Bend area. The BB State Ranch is another resource.
This is a great resource:
Southwestern.net page
Boondocking (off the grid)
We stayed in the Davis Mountains on SP a few years back. No problems. Cool nights this time of year.
Texas is too big to fill up. You just have to be creative.

Re: spring break...too crazy/crowded??
If your into camping and your bringing all of your children you must not forget the things needed like the tents, first aid kit and food. It's fun spending time with your family during spring break, just don't forget to bring cameras to capture stolen moments.
