So tell me....is it too hot to camp?
My idea of a great camping experience is one where we don't have to run the AC; one where we can have the door and windows open all day AND night; one where we can sit around the camp fire until late, and sleep in the next morning...
So, why is it that during the "very HOT" summer months, I suffer from severe camping withdrawals?
Anyone here suffer the same??? Or could it be that my senior years have caught up with me?
YIKES! Hurry September and get here....I gotta go camping!!!

Re: So tell me....is it too hot to camp?
Common problem with no easy solution, save waiting. I don't fare well in the summer heat, either. This summer, I've been bicycling but I haven't camped in a long while... a knee injury last November - January, then surgery and rehab, pretty much blew away my camping opportunities for the past year. I'm looking forward to fall and winter, let me tell ya!

Yeah, that's just the price you pay for living in TX.......5 months of summer. And then summer can return at anytime during the other seasons.
That lady from Ohio was complaining about 8 months of snow up there. Well, she's going to have a rude awakening when she moves down here.
I prefer cooler weather myself but I have a good job here so I'm not moving.

I'll take the summer (and "Super Summer" ) as long as I can have spring in Texas ! Nothing better. Having the 'yaks now gives DW and I good reason to be out more. Still, this last couple of weeks have been too hot even for that. Come on fall!
Happy Camping!

Exactly. Isn't there a group planning such a trip?
I just got back from a whirlwind weekend hike in the Pecos Wilderness. Didn't get much sleep but it was world-class backpacking. There are still quite a few snow fields at 12,000'.
The other thing I do to survive the heat is to camp out of a kayak on a river or lake that has primitive camping on the shore.

Re: So tell me....is it too hot to camp?
I am one of those strange ones that will camp year round in the Texas heat. The heat doesn't bother me at all, but I can't take camping in cold weather. We spent a week camping in Big Bend over spring break and I nearly froze to death at night!

Depends on your idea of fun--if there's a place to swim then any time is a good time to camp--rent an electrical site and bring a small fan. If there is shade, ice, and a waterhole you are in business--also sleep in the middle of the day--

Re: So tell me....is it too hot to camp?
Tent camping in the summer here in Texas can be brutal! I clearly remember a camping trip with Shannon at Brazos Bend State Park where the total lack of wind combined with sizzling temperatures at night in the 90's and a high humidity resulted in an "oven-like" experience.
At least when you're cold, you can keep adding layers. When you're burning up and ALL the layers are gone (and I mean all!)...and you're STILL dying of heat...you've run out of options.
It didn't help that in the distance we could hear the air-conditioners of the RV campers cycling on and off.
Big lesson learned from that trip is that if you're going to brave that heat, bring a small, battery-powered fan of some sort. ANY kind if air movement would have helped a great deal I think...

...particularly if it had been moving through an air conditioner, I'll bet !
Sorry! Sometimes I just can't help myself . Happy Camping!

Re: So tell me....is it too hot to camp?
On one trip to Choke Canyon SP, we noticed some campers in the water-electric loop had cut a hole on their tent and duct-taped the opening around a small window A/C that was sitting on the ground. Probably helped a lot at night.
With our hybrid travel trailer and the rooftop A/C, it's never too hot for us to camp. We usually camp near a swimming hole anyway, so the heat is never really a problem.

Believe it or not, DW and I have seen this done a number of times. Even thought about it while we were still tent camping!
Happy Camping!

Re: So tell me....is it too hot to camp?
We just returned from camping on Lake Lewisville for 5 nights. The breeze was great and we were able to be out all day. That cool front came through and I actually went and bought a caot at Walmart. Hey, It was a high of 73 and there was a breeze  I did return the coat as the beer killed the feeling of cold over time!!
There were many in tents? Water was nice and do the a/c thing??
