Re: Snakes on Mustang Island
We go at least once a year and camp at Mustang Island, usually around June. You are more likely to see a Portugese Man of War than a snake, and considering I have seen 30 scorpions IN MY HOUSE in San Antonio and NONE at Mustang Island should comfort you.
We camp at the base of the dunes and have never had a problem with critters, we take our little kids even when they were babies. You are not supposed to go onto the dunes anyways, so don't worry about it.
One word of caution: Park your vehicle on an angle to cut some of the wind on your tent. Once, a T-storm followed us from SA. It hit at about 11pm and lasted until 4am. Our tent poles broke from the wind, and I had to sleep with a tent caving in on us (4 month old slept right through it LOL) and rain leaking in. We have plain old regular tent stakes, so 15" would be fine. Take a couple extra.
Hope you have fun!
