Secluded beaches for camping?

Hi, the girlfriend and I are planning on going camping on a beach on the coast at the beginning of September, and we'd like to find a beach that is as secluded as possible to spend some time alone together relaxing outdoors.

What beaches allow camping and are good for it? And where can we go where we won't run into people? We'd be driving from San Antonio, so anything near Corpus is a viable option or within 3 (at the most 4) hours from San Antonio.

Thanks!

Padre Island was my first thought also. But be careful not to get your vehicle stuck in the sand.

Re: Secluded beaches for camping?

PINS without a doubt. If you have a 4x4 vehicle, you can get lost down there without seeing hardly anyone, especially during the weekdays. Malaqi(sp?) is where you want to go. Hit the beach and turn right, 1st 5miles are 2wd OK, the next 60 plus miles you really are better off with a
4x4. Have been as far as the 20 mile marker in my 2wd, just depends on the beach though. When I had a 4x4 DW and I would campout between Big and Little Shell and only see a handful of people driving past us, during our stay. Can checkout www.corpusfishing.com for beach conditions @ PINS before you hit the road.

We don't have a 4x4 vehicle available to us, but PINS does have a few miles where regular vehicles can drive, right?
Abso-tively, it does! We've taken our Toyota Corolla there on several occasions and driven all the way down to the start of the 4x4 only beach area. It helps to have good sand conditions -- not to wet, not too dry and windblown.

If you have a really low slung vehicle, like a Miata or Corvette, though, you might want to carpool with someone who has slightly more ground clearance... you don't need much, but I've seen some dicey drivers out there, including one Miata that needed a tow out (thankfully, another beach camper helped 'em out, as a tow truck service charges an arm and a leg, usually, to rescue folks out there.)

That said...if a fully loaded RV can make it, anyone can, as long as you follow the tracks and keep an eye out for areas and debris that will challenge your ground clearance and/or traction...

Thanks for the help everyone, especially that link about the weather Txslowpoke.

We won't have access to a 4x4, but there are a few miles accessible by regular vehicles right?

Re: Secluded beaches for camping?

The 1st 5 miles are 2wd friendly, sometimes you can go 20 plus miles in 2wd. Really depends on beach condition. If you get on the beach at low tide(good driving then) just make sure you still can drive on the high road too, so when the tide comes in your good to go. Its easy to see the high road vs. low road when on the beach.
hope this helps

Re: Secluded beaches for camping?

here is another thought to consider............. make sure to mark out your camp with reflective tape, markers, etc. Put a vehicle on the "right" side of camp to protect it from oncoming traffic. If ya got 2 vehicles or more "box in" your camp. This is like the last of the wild west IMHO............love it while ya can.
