recomendations for memorial day weekend....

i'm wanting to take the family out on our first camping trip of the year. looking for some help on chooseing where to go. i'm in the dallas area. i'm really not sure how busy the campgrounds get but more than anything i'm looking for a place that is family friendly with clean showers/restrooms. we have a 2yr old and a 5yr old. i'm wanting to tent it but i have the option of taking the tt. i've looked into the following places ray roberts, lake whitney, purtis creek, daingerfield, or lake mineral wells. fell free to suggest others... thanks in advance

Re: recomendations for memorial day weekend....

It will be hard this late, start calling the tpwd number (if you want a state park) tomorrow 512/389-8900 for thursday I would not use the internet ressies personnaly
Both Ray Roberts parks are good and have a beach, there are reviews on all those parks on this forum. We like Cooper Lake SP (south), look for the park name or do a search on the left. Good luck

There is a discussion on internet ressies on this forum too

If they are full try ceder hill sp its close and a very big park here is a recent trip Cedar Hill SP 4/08

Re: recomendations for memorial day weekend....

It's not in Dallas area, but I'm going to Inks Lake SP early Friday afternoon for the weekend! I made the reservations eons ago, however....most places are booked I think.
We will tour Longhorn cavern, take the "Vanishing Texas River Cruise", and take the train ride in Austin---waaaayyy fun!

Re: recomendations for memorial day weekend....

I know that they are full, but with three kids of my own ages 3 to 8, our favorite place to go during the summer is Tyler State Park because we think that they have the best swimming area around. In the non swimming months Cooper SP (south) is a favorite of ours because they have a really nice playground for the kids. Cerdar Hill has a good swim area but gets very crowded and they also have a play area. Hope you find something and hope this helps for future reverence.

Re: recomendations for memorial day weekend....

You may also want to check out some of the area campsites that offer sites on a first-come-first-serve basis. But be warned, they are filling up quickly.

While ReserveAmerica is lousy for making reservations, I do find it useful for researching campsites and availabililty. Put in your criteria, and it will tell you everything in your area and what's actually available, plus amenities etc. It will identify national as well as state sites, plus private sites too.

I didn't get in a reservation in time for a site this weekend either, but my favorite campsite has nonreservable sites for walk-ups on a first-come-first-serve basis. I drove out from Houston yesterday after work and claimed my favorite spot, set up camp for the weekend, and will head back as soon as I'm off work today.

Good luck!
