Prude Ranch at Ft. Davis??

Anyone ever stayed there? I was looking for somewhere different & have a pop up. So I was interested in the RV sites. I already considered Davis Mtns. SP but thought my son might enjoy the indoor pool at Prude.

We're looking at going the week after Christmas this year.

We have not stayed there, but we have a friend who did. She and her husband really enjoyed it. Plus, you won't find a better part of Texas, in my opinion.

I've attended the (week long) Texas Star Party at Prude Ranch for many springs. I've never camped, but have always stayed in a bunkhouse.

It's a fun place - They have horseback riding, a nice dining hall, basketball, tennis, hiking, etc. And, as has been said, you won't find a better part of Texas to spend a few years.

If you've not already been there, check out http://www.prude-ranch.com/ (and while you're at it, go to www.texasstarparty.com :-)

Re: Prude Ranch at Ft. Davis??

I stayed in August of 2005. I stayed in a cabin for one night, and it was facing a beautiful valley. I sat on the porch to watch the sunrise, and the cowgirl drove all the horses out of this valley up towards my cabin, it was a very memorable experience! One of my good friends used to work there, met her now husband there, and recommended it to me.

The breakfast was wonderful, too! They had all kinds of good stuff to eat in a really nice dining area. Other than that, I regret that I didn't get to see much else...I got in late at night in PITCH darkness...could barely find my cabin! And had to leave early the next morning to head down to Big Bend, but the time I did spend was just perfect.

I don't know how to post pictures, but here's a link to a few that I got:

I hope you get to go and enjoy it! I wanted to go to the planetarium also, but I was pregnant and the altitude was above what I was supposed to go to. Funny, cause I hiked Big Bend, camped, took a river raft tour, and a 4 x 4 jeep tour that same week, alone...maybe next time LOL!

Re: Prude Ranch at Ft. Davis??

Believe it or not, Balmorhea State Park is outstanding, even in the winter. I too have a pop-up camper (Starcraft 11RT). It is a short drive from Balmorhea to Fort Davis, Prude Ranch, and McDonald. Even in the winter, Balmorhea is great for swimming as the water is a constant 72 degrees. Even in the winter, it can get down right hot in West Texas. The camping is "ok" at Balmorhea, typical TPWD camping with the sites right on top of each other. But, the facilities are great. I've also camped at Davis Mountains SP and it to is good. There is more hiking, etc. to do at Davis Mountains SP. Here are a slew of pics from both.

That my friend is a pop-up. I never even given it a thought to own one until I saw your 11RT. It was not the outside grill attachment that won me over but the cargo space in front. I might have to look into a 11RT.

Wow Shane, love your pictures! You sure eat good! Now I REALLY want to go back! I went by myself, but I keep telling my husband we need to go with the kids. The whole area is just so beautiful. I didn't make it to Balmorhea. Did you ever take any underwater photos? I hear it's good for that.

Re: Prude Ranch at Ft. Davis??

Thank you for the kind complement - we try to eat/sleep/drink well on these forays into the desert / woods. I have an underwater camera, Sea&Sea, but it just really didn't take that great of pics under water - it's old. My digital camera does not like water. If anyone ever goes to Balmorhea, do not forget to take a mask, fins, and snorkel - it's required to get the full enjoyment. The place across the road rents/sells them. Just a simply magnificent place. It's worth the 12+ hour drive from where I'm at out there - even for a short labor day weekend trip - 2 days of driving for 2 days on the ground...
