Primitive camping with firewood gathering

All SPs prohibit gathering firewood. But, are there any places in Central Texas (or anywhere in Texas for that matter) where you can gather firewood and create a real (responsibly controlled) campfire?

Also, is there a list of any privately-owned camping areas around Central Texas?

Basically, myself and wife and another couple are looking for less restrictive camping options. Any ideas welcome, thanks!

One option:
You can collect driftwood (or bring your own materials) and build a campfire/small bonfire if you're camping along the beach (not in the developed campgrounds) at Padre Island National Seashore.

Corps of Engineers lakes may allow you to collect wood, so long as it's dead and on the ground.
