Primitive Camping

Hello...
I am looking for a place within 100 miles of Austin to take my son camping. I am interested in a place where we can "get away" from it all...perhaps drive "way in" somewhere and just explore. Is anyone aware of such a place?
Thanks

Re: Primitive Camping

I was at Lost Maples about 2 weeks ago. It has 6 or 7 primitive campgrounds scattered throughout the park, a couple as many as 3 or 4 miles or more from the trailhead. The closest primitive camping there is probably a mile or mile and a half from the trailhead. However, the scenery is beautiful and the trails are fun.

Now that the trees are beginning to turn, there will be crowds at Lost Maples, especially on the weekends; however, the back country should stay pretty quiet. When we were there on Oct. 20, we hiked the East Trail and the West Trail, and only encountered 2 other couples.

Enchanted Rock is interesting. All of its camping sites are primitive (no RV hookups). Some of the sites are on the south side of the Little Rock within an easy walk of parking. However, there are 3 other campgrounds that are away from the park facilities. This is another busy park, though.

Re: Primitive Camping

Pedernales Falls SP has LOTS of space for primitive camping. Great this time of year.

Re: Primitive Camping

I hear good things about Colorado Bend S.P.
Nice and close to you as well.
I have not personally been there but there are some discussions here you could search for
