Re: Primitive Camping

Welcome to Wild Texas smackmeister!

Great photos and trip reports!:thumbsup: I'm with you guys as far as solitude is concerned. Consider trying out Guadalupe Mountains National Park. It's another long drive from most anywhere, but the backcountry of GMNP is a great place to find solitude, scenic beauty and communion with nature. I've gone backpacking there every summer for the past three summers. It's a popular place during the Fall when the maple leaves are turning, similar to Lost Maples; so, probably not the best time for solitude.

The following are links to reports for my first two trips:

Backpacking the Guadalupe Mountains

Guadalupe Mountains Adventure

The trip I made this summer was my first solo trip. I hope to post a trip report in the next month or so, when I find some time to put it together. I'll post a link when I do.

Again, welcome to the forum! Hope to see many more posts.

Re: Primitive Camping

Thanks John! Gret pics of Guadalupe Mountains. Reminds me a lot of Big Bend. Another spot that I've heard great things about is Caprock Canyon. Anyone had any experience with it?

Re: Primitive Camping

Caprock is stunningly beautiful. I've camped there twice and am looking forward to seeing the new visitor center next time I go back. If you go make sure you hike to Fern Cave. It is an accomplishment, especially in August, which is when we hiked to it. DO NOT take the "Extremely Steep & Rugged" warnings on the map lightly. I did the first time.
