The speedbump family recently completed a spring break mini-trip to Possum Kingdom. We stayed in one of the cabins. They were built by the CCC, but much to my surprise were constructed of cinder blocks, not native stone as I had expected. Other than that, they were nice, complete with a kitchenette and full bathroom.
The park store was a nice surprise. The owners/operators were very friendly and the store carried (at least according to the signs hanging from the ceiling above the aisles) almost everything on one aisle, and everthing else on the other aisle.
It was too windy to rent a canoe or kayak, but we did a bit of fishing (no luck) and flew a kite. The one and only hiking trail was mildly disappointing as it was only 1.5 miles. And we saw hide nor hair of the possums.
We arrrived the day after the heavy rains stopped, so mud was everywhere but the sun was out for our entire stay. The park was fairly full, and the water was cold.
We also made a day trip to Mineral Wells SP. Penetentiary Hollow (a rocky ravine-great for rock scrambling and climbing) was great. Mud was again a factor and signs were posted that the area was closed to climbers. The hiking trail by the lake shore could have been marked better, since the heavy use has created many shortcuts and getting off-trail was easy.
