Question Portable shower suggestions...?

Hi all!!

Well, we're planning on heading out to CBSP area for part of Spring Break and it looks like shower facilities are sketchy at best... I can go a day or two without but that's about my limit so I was wondering what everyone else does when tent camping and there a limited or no showers.

Has anyone tried out the Cabela's Shower Shelter? Other brands? I don't want to spend a fortune but if it will keep me fresh for 4-5 days I'm willing to spend a little anyway.

Any suggestions/comments are welcomed!!
thanks!

Re: Portable shower suggestions...?

I've never been to a SP that doesn't have shower facilities? What's the problem? ON my pop up forums everyone swears by the Coleman Hot Water on Demand type units. But they're over $100. What about those hanging black solar bags? You will also need a shower 'stall' type unit. And don't forget that you will probably need to collect the 'grey water' from your shower -- a plastic tub to stand in would work.....

Re: Portable shower suggestions...?

Colorado Bend State Park (CBSP) is one of the TX State Parks that is outfitted more like a State Natural Area -- it's kept primitive (with a maximum vehicle limit, fewer buildings/structures/roads, etc.). It has limited potable water, a shower "rinse off area" but not the formal showers/stalls you see in other TX State Parks, and unless I'm remembering incorrectly, all bathroom facilities are composting toilets.

Re: Portable shower suggestions...?

You're remembering correctly Shannon! (And boy, was my daughter fascinated by those toilets. lol!)

I've read good things about the actual CAbela's Shower Shelter but mixed reviews about the shower bag that comes with it... I was just curious about what others on this site thtought.

Looks like the fishing is going down hill at CBSP and the boat ramp is closed so instead of shower problems finding a different park might be a bigger concern.

But eventually I'll need to know so still appreciate any input!!
thanks!

Re: Portable shower suggestions...?

I've been pleased with my Zordi water heater.

It looks like they have improved the design since I bought mine for $110 at Academy. I bought it for a trip to the Chisos Basin in Big Bend. Didn't think it was a wise use of gas to drive 29 miles to the Rio Grande Village for a shower. Yes, I know water is precious in the basin, so I toted water from San Antonio just to use for showers.

Re: Portable shower suggestions...?

My wife won a Cabela's Shower last year and we've used it a few times where outside showers are permitted without restrictions on gray water disposal. Here in the east (NC) that limits us to Portsmouth Island and Core Banks on the Cape Lookout National Seashore and the dispersed sites in the National Forests in our state.

The enclosure itself is well designed and relatively sturdy and the bag will definitely get warm enough when left in direct sunlight. However, the hose to the shower heads kinks easily and there's usually more of a dribble than a spray.

We have a small camper (16' Scamp) with a propane water heater and a pressurized water supply so I rigged a hose and shower head long enough to reach the outside the camper. This works really well with the Cabela's unit. All things considered, I think there are better things to spend your money on and, depending on your level of modesty, cheaper ways to get clean.

We're also backpackers and tenters and have found baby wipes to be an acceptable substitute for showers when out in the boonies for several days. That we've been married nearly thirty years and have both been without running water for the same length of time may be a factor here though.

Re: Portable shower suggestions...?

Just some food for thought, I've been to CBSP a few time and love it. It is a bit of a haul to civilization, i.e. Lampasas. There are some trails that will lead you to a swimming hole that could serve as a "get the grit off" type of bath without soap of course - although, Spring Break may be still a bit cold! Not sure if that really even helped, sorry.

I second the baby wipes idea. They really do make you feel refreshed.

Re: Portable shower suggestions...?

Try a sponge bath with water warmed on the coleman. Follow with pretty smelling lotion. Or just stay one night and camp another park with showers the next night.

Thumbs up Re: Portable shower suggestions...?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!!
Since the water level is so low and fishing just isn't going well we've actually decided to go to Lake Texana (never been there!) instead so we'll save the suggestions for next time!

Thanks again!
