"Off the beaten path" drive-up camping sites

Hello again and thanks to all who posted replies to my previous thread questions...

I wanted to know where else one could camp off-the-beaten path w/ capable 4x4 vehicle and capable pop-up trailer....I am not talkin "hike-in" but primitive "drive in" type camping...am i making sense???

2 places come to mind:
"backcountry" primitive roadside in Big Bend
"on the beach" Padre Island NS

anyone know of any others in TX??? I assume the NF's in New Mexico would be the next likely places...

I hope I am using the right descriptive lingo...

Thanks again
Bill

Re: "Off the beaten path" drive-up camping sites

There's a discussion about this in the other camping forums I belong to from time to time. Unfortunately, in Texas your options are VERY limited since 99% of Texas land is privately owned. I gather from what others say that this is not the case in other states. In Colorado, where my brother lived for a time, he says only about 50% of the land is private. There you can just drive up some logging road in the mtns. & set up camp wherever you wish. In Texas you will get shot. Or you will be boondocking at the local jail instead!

Good luck on finding places to boondock!

Here is just another idea, Offroad parks. there are several in east tx area. First 2 off the top of head are Shiloh ridge in Alto texas and Barnwell in Gilmore tx. There are many more that have opened up. If you dont mind the offroad folks its pretty nice. Like at gilnore you have 2000 plus acres to camp and do what you want. As long as you dont block a trail. Weekends are busy, weekdays can be very nice.
just an idea.

I would think the National Forsest could be what you are looking for?

I think the Neches Bluff section of the 4c trail in the Davy Crockett N.F. might be of interest. Also the Sam Houston N.F. Angelina N.F.
