Motorcycle Camping

Hello everyone, I hope this question hasn't been answered to death but I still need to ask.

I'm a bit new to camping (haven't done it in 15 years since college) but wanted to get back out and enjoy the solitude I've re-discovered after getting back on my Cruiser. What I'd really love to do is strap the basic camping set to my bike and go off for the weekend. I'm looking for a quiet spot near DFW (I've been looking at Caddo) where I can take my bike and pull of the road and just enjoy a weekend alone around a campfire for the weekend.

Any suggestions or information you could share would be much appreciated.

Re: Motorcycle Camping

Welcome aboard and I hope you enjoy your time here.

Can't help a lot with your question. As you can see by my avator, being able to "pull off the road" is not really an option for me! In addition, finding a quiet spot on the weekend near DFW may be tough to come by. Also, in Texas, there is very little (probably none in the DFW area) "public" land where this would be an option. I will say that if you can get away during the week in the early spring and into the fall, there are a good many places where you can often be alone. There have been many times in the early part of the year when DW and I have been the only ones in Cleburne SP. Also at the same time of year at Mineral Wells SP, you may not be alone but the layout can make you feel like you are. Some of the area "Corps" parks can offer the same types of options during these times of the year.

People tend to camp less during the early spring and late fall. Fewer still have the option to be out during the week. Main reason we won't give up our mid-week "weekend" for anything even though our seniority would give us anything we want. Hope this helps some and you find what your looking for.

Happy Camping!

Re: Motorcycle Camping

No problem, that's a huge camper you've got there. I'm on a minimalist kick right now and trying to simplify my life and motorcycle camping seems to be the most comfortable path I can think of.

Reading a few of the posts here makes me Think Caddo might be the ideal place to spend a weekend or so, anyone have any reviews or experience there?

Re: Motorcycle Camping

Welcome aboard Forever,

Caddo would make nice enough spot. In addition you could make a nice ride out of it by sticking to 80 instead of I-20. You are going to find the regular state type sites and I forget what the primitive sites look like, or if they have them for that matter. If you have never been that way, the area around Karnack and Uncertain makes for a pretty day ride. Check the map but I believe it is 43 that runs from Marshall up to Atlanta.

Enjoy your trip and provide some feedback on what you find

Re: Motorcycle Camping

Martin Creek Lake State Park looks nice to me. There are wildflower trails through May 31 here.

Texas is funny about private property. I would camp in a campground or talk with owner before setting up camp or starting a fire.
