Arrow McKinney Falls State Park camping

I'm heading up to McKinney Falls SP tomorrow to get my camp on for 3 days! The weather looks like it will be perfect!

Re: McKinney Falls State Park camping

Good luck Bert. They had a huge storm roll through Austin yesterday. THe weather channel showed the pictures of their hail from Leander TX. There is a storm brewing here is SA right now. I thought I could sleep in with the overcast skies and open windows but the thunder woke me up.

For you sake, I hope this just blows through, rinsing all the cedar pollen off the trees and puts some water in the falls at McKinney for you. There are other things to do in town if the weather is yucky. Just ask the rangers. There is also an HEB grocery store on William Cannon and I-35 for whatever you forget, it's about 10 minutes from the park.

Have a great time.

Re: McKinney Falls State Park camping

I got hit pretty bad here in Cedar Park, but I don't think McKinney got much of anything but some rain - which would be welcome.

This was my first hail storm in TX that we literally had golf ball sized hail. My car has some pretty major damage, and I don't know about the roof yet.

Went for a walk with the kids today and saw 2 dead birds. No time to find cover. It was bad.

My aunt lives in Marble Falls, north of Austin. The rain they got last week was the first measurable rain they'd had in 17 months!!!!! They got over 3" I believe she said.

Re: McKinney Falls State Park camping

We had a good time at McKinney Falls, even with the great amount of rain that fell Thurs-Friday. If we could of had a campfire, we would of had an excellent time.

The trail map for the other side of the lower falls is totally whack though and needs redrawn.

Re: McKinney Falls State Park camping

I'm late to the thread, but we camped at McKinney a few weeks ago, before the rain. The waters were pretty low, but it made the fishing easier.

Had a great time, this is a nice park!

Re: McKinney Falls State Park camping

Can anyone tell me if there is still a burn ban in effect for this area??

I was supposed to go to Village Creek and canoe this weekend. Called the park today and they said it was still well over a foot above where it needs to be and it doesn't look promising for the weekend. Gotta have a back up plan but would like to have a fire.

MM: Travis County is not presently under a burn ban according to this site:

However, it wasn't accurate the last time I was there and burn bans are enacted on Tuesdays only, so call McKinney Falls state Park directly to make sure before you haul wood to the park.

Re: McKinney Falls State Park camping

We were just there with a girl scout troop and had a WONDERFUL time. Big, blazing fire for the smores was welcome. It rained on us in the middle of the night - 8 girls and 3 adults in one tent, but all was well.

Lovely park, great trails, and many very private sites. You won't be disappointed.

The water level is low, but quality was good so the kids splashed around. Older boys jumping in off the upper falls. We saw deer, frogs, a snake skin, raccoons, and tons of birds.

Have a great time!!!

Well I am about to call the park and attempt to make a ressie. I hope they have availability still for the weekend. AND I hope that by the time I arrive on Friday afternoon I will still be able to get a decent spot. I will also ask about water quality before I actually book anything. Gotta be able to cool off in the water!

Re: McKinney Falls State Park camping

Called the park and verified that the water quality is good for swimming. And thanks for the info on the burn ban!

Does anyone know a couple of good sites to choose from when we arrive? I have never been here and know nothing.

I did read they are doing a guided hike on Saturday morning which we will try to do. I think the kids will enjoy it and it won't be too hot then.
