Matagorda

:ribbit: Hi all,

Trying to work on getaway plans for sometime during the summer and looking at Matagorda. Would love to get any input/experiences from anybody whose backpacked the island. Especially what you did to get a boat ride to the island!

Thanks-
Matthew

Re: Matagorda

HI THERE!!! I AM A MATAGORDA FANATIC!!! Grew up in Bay City and spent many weekends in Matagorda and now am a teacher here!!!

I haven't camped on the island, but I have on the beach (tent) and now own a 5th wheel and camp at the new LCRA park right at the beach.

I will try to find someone that has experience with the island and get some information for you!!!

Re: Matagorda

Cool. Is there road access to the Island? Perhaps I missed something.

The main two worries are this: the heat. water. I can't filter saltwater for drinking, and it sounds like there are no fresh water sources on the strip island, so I'd have to carry all of it - which amounts to several gallons for a few day trip.

I'd appreciate any info.

Re: Matagorda

The Matagorda Island is separate from the Matagorda Pennisula where the LCRA park is located. There is no ferry to Matagorda Island, but you can usually get a ride over from Port O'Connor. You have to pack in everything and pack everything out.

Maps of penisula from the air.

I would suggest you take a trip over there for the afternoon or day to check it out before you commit to camping.
