Looking for a great spot

Hey guys/gals. I am so glad I have run across this website. I ma interested in going campin over the New Years weekend to get away from the city. I am sure all of you know what I am talking about. I live in Houston and would prefer ot to be somewhat secluded and campfires are a must for me. I ma not a big hiker anymore as the Army ruined carrying packs for me. (either that or im just lazy now lol) If you guys have any ideas or thoughts please let me know about them.
Thanks,
Eddie

Welcome estone. Perhaps Huntsville State Park would be good for you. Large wooded sites and loads of them. Should be able to find privacy? Also Brazos Bend State Park. www.tpwd.com is the adress I believe?
National Forest wood be great as they allow camping most anywhere and fires ar o.k. The problem is hunting season!!!
Fairfield has a primitive site 3 miles in but the sound of the power plant sucks?
State parks will probably fit the bill the best.
Lots of great camping close to Houston. When I lived there that was all that kept me going!

If you wanted to try something on a smaller scale than the State Parks, go to a Forest Service campground like Double Lake or Stubblefield Lake.

Re: Looking for a great spot

Well, i think that huntsville woudl make a nice spot as well. I was not aware of the fact that they allowed campfires though. I woudl like to be able to park my vehicle within like 30-40 feet of our camp though and as doing so i am aware that it would somewhat limit our privacy and seclusion but hopefully all will work out. Does anyone have the phone number to reserve a spot and find out more info? Do they have horse trails and all of that as well?
thanks everyone.

Actually i just found out that at Huntsville a fire ring is provided but it is around all of the other campers as well, so that is definately out for me. Thinking about my beach house instead.

If you are serious about seclusion, try Lake Houston State Park. Few people frequent it, because it only allows tent camping, it isn't actually on the lake, there's no electricity and they don't even have water at every site. But they do allow fires, there is a clear running creek with a picturesque foot bridge and easy hiking trails. You may run into mountain bikers on the trails but not many.

This is a good suggestion. This park is not that well know and ,therefore, not that populated. They have a very good hiking trail system.
