looking for free camping near austin

as the title says, i'm looking for any place within an hour or two of austin where i can put a tent on the ground and sleep for free. i know that national forests often have free campgrounds, but i didn't see any within a reasonable distance of austin when i checked.

Re: looking for free camping near austin

Welcome aboard! Hope you can find what your looking for but most land in Texas is private property or controlled by the government in one form or the other. There really aren't many places that are open to free camping. Might find some out in west Texas but I wouldn't even bet on it there. I ran a couple of searchs but came up empty.

You have some great camping opportunities right in your area. All the state parks in the Hill Country are great. McKinney Falls, just to your south is nice though not free. I have info on most of the SP's in your area, if your interested.

Sorry I couldn't be much more help. Again, welcome aboard and,

Happy Camping!
