Lantern Question

Maybe ya'll can solve the debate between a friend and I. We're talking about lanterns, we are debating a battery start propane lantern and a match start propane lantern

My thoughts, although a battery pushbutton lantern would be easy to use, you have to worry about the battery dieing on you and carrying spare batteries, either keeping them on you or in a safe place away from the elements. Matches woudln't be the easiest thing to use in a wind storm, but they serve a dual purpose, light fire and lantern, they make windproof and waterproof matches. My vote is match light lantern over push button, as his vote is ease of button rather then match.

Whatcha think?

Re: Lantern Question

First, I never owned a "battery-op" ignition lantern. I did own an "electronic ignition" one, but that was more of a magneto-kinetic enrgy type trigger. This is just how the instant lighting propane grills are made. Check with the product and see. If so, there shouldn't be a battery issue.

If the lantern does indeed take a battery, then I would think that IF the battery went dead, you could still start a battery-op propane lantern with a match. (Again, just like you can with a grill) Isn't there access in under the globe? If you can, buy the battery op model and you both win.

Re: Lantern Question

Thats true, I own the Coleman elecltronic start lantern and they dont need batteries. They start in the same fashion as a lighter works. You can also light them with matches as well if you like. Even those long BBQ lighters will work.

NOTE the match doesnt have to touch the mantels. In fact it should never touch the mantels. All you have to do is get flame in the air vents below the globe and if thier is enough fuel put out then it will light. Now dont let it sit for like a min then try that. Just put the flame to the hole and turn it on. Few second later you have light.

So all in all, thier is no difference between the coleman brands. They are indentical with the exception one is electronic. electronics comes in handy so you dont have to pack matches or lighter. Its one of those Emergnecy kind of lanterens. You cant go wrong ether way.

Re: Lantern Question

Thanks for the advice, I had never heard of a batter operated lantern, i was going off of what my friend told me. I ended up going with the electronic start coleman propane lantern, it was 39 bucks with one of the hard plastic cases.

Thanks for all the help!

Re: Lantern Question

Yea they are great, i own both and i know the one your talking about. Just one more hint of advice. You might now this, you might not. With these coleman lanterns if they get wet as in water in the globe from rain or what not. You will need to dry it out compeletly. If you try to start it while its wet then it will catch fire and could case alot of damage. This is a known problem that i had brought to Colemans attention during feild testing. Now if its already lit, and its getting wet your ok. just FYI.

Re: Lantern Question

Yea those electronic start ones are nice. I have one of each, match start and electronic start. Another nice thing to look into is the Clip on Mantels. They save alot of time when you need it most.
