Just spent a week at Inks
|
|
The family and I just spent a wonderful week at Inks (6/1 - 6/7). We got site number 232 and it was perfect for fishing, water access, privacy and shade. The first night we got there we had site 254 and it was very depressing. Hubby got up and got us a good site the next morning.
I travel with a wonderful hubby of almost 12 years, an almost 3rd grader (son) and almost 4th grader (son), and our beloved Jezzie (English Springer Spaniel of 3 years). We have kayaks, but due to just purchasing our first 5th wheelwe couldn't swing the cost of racks. We rented a canoe and it did us just fine.
We first have to thank Turn Key for his wonderful review of Inks!!! It felt like we had all the info we needed and settling in was 100% easier due to his review.
The weather was beautiful. We were so pleasantly surprised to discover a LACK of flying insects. We live in a mosquito infested area (Matagorda County). We never needed spray or ant poision.
Friday, due to getting site 232...the real fun started! We settled in, and set up camp. The boys brought tents, although only one son was brave enough to sleep in it without us. We drove the campgrounds and located all the sites, fishing piers, BBQ place, store, playgrounds, restrooms/showers, and hiking trails. We played in the water by our site and relaxed most of the evening.
Saturday a Ranger came by and invited us to an Angler Clinic from 3-7pm at the pier by the store. After a quick nap for the parents, we were off and boy was it a blast. We all learned lots and enjoyed the last hour fishing with the rangers/teachers. The boys earned a certificate and received a bag full of wonderful info/prizes and goodies. My boys each won tackle boxes from a raffle.
By Sunday the boys met a friend! They were off and on bikes (we have walkie talkies to keep in touch). Side note, if you take bikes, take extra tubes because our boys had flats often!!! We met a neat couple from the Houston area and feel in love with their camper (Mobile Scout). They have been camping for years and had lots to share. That evening we found the trail to Devil's Watering Hole and really enjoyed some water play. We watched kids jump from the rocks and it was pretty "hairy" on some of the jumps. There was some underage drinking going on, but it appeared that shortly after we left...the kids were busted. We left at dusk to cook.
Monday's highlight was renting paddle boats. We wore the boys out!!! I have to say that it was a treat to have my hubby and boys paddle me around the lake. We rented them for an hour, but after 30 minutes...they were all exhausted. It was a quiet, but nice day.
Tuesday was canoe day. We paddled down to the place that Turn Key described as the waterfall. Due to a lack of rain...well, it was reduced to stagnated pools of water, but we took advantage and walked up the waterfall. On the way down we encountered our first SNAKES!!! It didn't take long for any of us to load up in the canoe and get the heck out of there!!!
Wednesday came and we basically slept in, ate a late breakfast and then later that afternoon we headed to Devil's Watering Hole. I stayed on the trail's side of the lake while my boys jumped off the "small rocks" into the water. I sat at the water's edge and watched them. Hubby went back to the truck to get some snacks and I had the scare of my life. I stared eye to eye with the biggest, fattest water moccosin in my life. (I grew up on Caney Creek in Wharton, Texas and have seen my share of them). Honestly, he looked as scared as I was. I acquired several bruises flying out of the water onto the bank. I also screamed to the 20+ people down from me that they needed to GET OUT! Most listened. The ones that didn't flew out as soon as it made its way to them. I decided that it was time to get home. I don't like snakes. I got my boys back across the lake and we hightailed it home. We met my hubby on the trail back to the truck and he looked at us like we were crazy. We took him back to the water's edge and he got to see "it" and agreed it was time head back.
Thursday came and we decided to head home. Traveling with Jezzie means making sure that we don't travel during the hot hours. We nearly lost her and my parent's dogs during the last hurricane evacuation due to heat. We wanted to make sure she got home safely.
It was very sad to leave such a beautiful place, but we know that we'll be back. There's more spots to explore, friends to make, and good times to be had. Snakes and all, it was a fabulous trip.
Please make sure you get to Inks. It's a blessing to have such a beautiful spot! Susan:cool:

We were there during the same time, Sun 3-Wed 7th. While ya'll were paddle-boating, we were swimming at the swim beach across from the ramp. While you were canoeing to Devils Waterhole on Tuesday, we were swimming there ( in the afternoon ). If you saw a 6 year old jumping from the 6' high cliff, that was my son.
Did you all see as many deer as we did? We didn't encounter any snakes like you did. If we had, we would have changed our plans to. What a great park! Glad to hear another glowing report for INKS.

Campermom!!! Turn Key told me to look for you, but I didn't think it would be too cool to go site to site asking for you! I wish we would have met up! I met so many people that day we were both there...I bet we at least said "hi" to each other. I sat across from the rock jumpers and was with another mom (blonde hair and black bikini) for a bit. After she left it was just me...until the snake showed up! I would have had on a tanktini with a skirt bottom. I have dark brown hair and had overside brown sunglasses. I bet we eventually met up!!!
Oh...I just loved INKS. We are heading to Goliad State Park June 29th-July 4th. The full hook ups will be a nice treat.
Looking forward to meeting you someday!!! Susan:cool:

HI there Annette...the first site was difficult to get the trailer into, was on a steep incline that made getting in and out of the trailer dangerous, and was surrounded (I mean packed) with tents and campers. To have walked to the water would have required us to really go through other camp sites. The only plus it had was that the bbq area was on a leveled area. Hope that helps, Susan:cool:

We also spent a week at inks lake and had a great time. The only gripe I had was how poorly the bath houses were being kept . The park was only half full and it was almost empty in the side without electricty.I had a great time at Falls creek winery. The kids keep me busy taking perch and catfish off their lines.Camper Mom -my wife shares your enjoyment of the roller coaster ride as does our 3 year old.We had good weather and look foward to going back as soon as posible. p.s. the bar b q is gooood.
good camping
