Inventors & Tycoons Go Camping!

Justin spotted this gem of a news story and sent it my way:
Three industrial giants -- Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone -- enjoyed camping expeditions...

It's a short article, but a neat story about how these powerful businessmen shared their love of the outdoors over the course of a decade.

Somehow, I find it hard to imagine powerful businessmen of OUR time on camping trips, but I could be wrong. Bill Gates or Steve Jobs in a tent, anyone? I don't think so... the CEO of REI, though? Suuuuuure!

The CEO of REI had BETTER be camping... Can you imagine a board meeting there with someone who isn't into the outdoors? I'm thinking:
"Bob, this is our new spring shorts product line"
bob answers " but why is everything earth-toned? why can't it be hot pink for the ladies and and reflective fire engine red and electric blue for the guys?" soon followed by: "Here's an idea... disposable clothes. they wear them once on the trail and throw them away at the end of each day."
silence echo's across the boardroom up there in Seattle... and someone screams a blood curdling, girly shreak.

yea, THAT guy better be in touch.

can you imagine being that guy? Maybe I'm going in the wrong direction with my life... apparently no one needs scientists anyway...

 I can see the CEO responding, "Ah, yes, I forgot to introduce everyone to our new hire...(stifling a chuckle) from Victoria's Secret."

With some of the products on the market, even in the outdoor recreation segment, you do have to wonder "WHAT were they thinking?!" Sadly, the moments I find myself doing just that, I have to scoot to the side to allow another consumer to reach for said merchandise, which they drop into their shopping cart and proceed to buy. "Clearly not marketed to people like me, I guess..."

Pet stores are the same way... I learned a long time ago not to let loose with my, "Who in the their right mind would buy ______ for a pet?!" because invariably my answer was usually a few steps away, making a beeline for said item. "Oops."

heh- I haven't learned my lesson yet with sticking my foot in my mouth. someday, I'm sure I will, and it will be painful. But right now, I'm still at the point where "anyone who buys that is insane." no one has yet argued with me, but I'm sure someday it'll happen. I can't seem to help myself though. There are some really stupid ideas out there.

(Of course, this is also coming from the person who took a rock, and carved "NO SOLICITING" into it, painted the letters black, and stuck in on my front porch. Perhaps I'm looking for confrontation these days...)
