Inks Lake SP

I just made reservations for this park (for our first time there) for Memorial Day weekend. Any thoughts on this park?

Re: Inks Lake SP

Inks Lake is a nice park. The only negative thing I might say is that it will probably be very crowded that weekend. Like Garner, it is one of those parks that is always packed on spring & summer weekends (or at least it always has been when I've been there that time of year). It has about 6 miles of hiking trails, on which one may see a lot of interesting rock (granite) formations. At the north/east end of the park, there is a nice swimming hole with small waterfalls. Some years it has a fantastic wildflower display, but that is mainly earlier (late March-early April), and not sure if that will happen this year with the ongoing drought. In any case, I bet y'all will have a good time, as long as you don't mind crowds.

Sandra, aren't you a teacher? Why not go during the middle of the week during spring breaks or such? That's what I'm hoping to do come May!!! Hee hee! (just don't tell my wife... she doesn't know yet).

Re: Inks Lake SP

Inks is great!!!
We stay on the more primitive side(water site only), much less crowded and wooded.

If you have a canoe or kayak, Inks is grea for that. They also have them for rent at the Park Store.

One thing to check out, is the Texas Freshwater fishery just down from the dam. It is truly amazing to see all the fish they have in those ponds!

I am indeed a teacher & I do have spring break upcoming---got Caddo Lake SP planned for that, tho. I am booking a water-only site a Inks myself cuz it's all I need.....hopefully the crowds won't be too noisy.

Re: Inks Lake SP

Top choice and one the parks we go to often. Wonderful clear-water lake and good camping. Park does get very busy on weekends but during the week, you have to "shoo" the deer out of your site at times.

Best route to take would be 67 out of Dallas, taking the by-pass around Cleburne. Continue on 67 through Glen Rose and then about another 8 miles until you come to 220. 220 south about 10 miles to Hico where you pickup 281, then south to Burnett where you intersect 29. Take 29 west about 8 miles and the Park Road (4) will be on your left. You can take I-35 south to 29 and then west but I've found that route to be long and very boring.

I have a review that I did of the area a few years ago. Would be glad to post a link here if your interested. I'd also be pleased to answer any questions I can. Hope you have a great trip and,

Happy Camping!

Re: Inks Lake SP

I'd love that link Please DO post it.
I am thinking about making reservations for us to ride the train from Austin to Burnet also...an old steam train would be fun!

Re: Inks Lake SP

Glad to do it! Link is below and will take you over to RV.NET (the copy I had posted here was lost during some changes to the site last year). I post there under the same username. The review is dated '05 and there have been few minor changes and nothing that should effect you. We were there for 4 days this last fall and the park is still outstanding. Only real change is the the loss of Mike's BBQ stand. He had to close up due to illness. Last I heard the park was still looking for some one to replace him.

Haven't riden that train though I've wanted to and am sure I will sooner or later.

Hope this helps and you have a great trip!

Happy Camping!
