Anyone familiar with this? We are still planning a Thanksgiving weekend trip. We are looking at perhaps multiple sites such as staying first night (trip from Dallas is LONG with a child and a dog) in Port Aransas/Corpus/North Padre and then traveling down to South Padre Island.

My husband lived, although never camped, in South Padre for a year and a half so he is familiar with the territory but not the park situations.

BTW those KOA's are expensive! But, they do have many activities for a hyper 12 year old like a heated pool.

Many scout people from the Plano area travel to stay on the Lexington in Corpus and take 281 rather than I35 down south, its a much easier drive on your nerves and that route gives you the opportunity to stop at state parks along the way up or back. As for the young one

Thank you, there will be many stops with the dog and all. He's a 9 month old labrador and HYPER but loves to go places. Just never taken him on over an hour trip before but leaving him is not an option as last time we had people check on him two/three times a day on him he tore up the blinds, the couch, and boarding him is an option but we want him to get used to traveling as we plan on doing more of this in the future.

Have you considered crate training the dog. Our brittany has had a crate since she was a pup and she loves it. We used to take her to "grandma's" house all the time and she will lay in her "room" the whole way. As soon as we start getting ready to go she would be sooooooooo hyper I would put her crate in the back of the explorer while we packed it and she would just stay in it. She was afraid of being left behind I guess. When we camped, we'd just put her "room" in the trailer and she would sleep like a baby. No getting up or barking as people went by.

Well considering we have a Kia Sorrento (I have a Solara which is two door non camping type car) with not much room and a dog that now stand as tall as I am, 5'6", with his paws on your chest there isn't enough room for a crate for him. The back fills up pretty fast with tent, ice chest, etc... We probably should have considered a larger SUV but due to gas and mileage with my husband's job on-site IT in Dallas school district opted for a smaller one. (sigh) The dog weighs over 50 lbs and is huge.....sweet, loveable, stupid....and huge lol.

Probably should have gone with something like an Explorer.

What about a roof rack? .........................C'mon, for the stuff, not the dog! I've never owned a dog but would love to some day ( once the kitties pass on), but friends with dogs who've used the crate have very well behaved animals. Can it ever really be to late to teach a dog to "Crate up"? If the crate won't fit in the car, maybe a blanket from the crate would work for traveling.

Not sure any of this "Cat-owner" babble will help, but I meant well.

You know I've never thought of that what a good idea!

This do WILL be a traveling dog and so far he seems to love it. He tried to get into the back seat of my car the other day in the garage when I was going to work.

Luckily we have my daughter close by who can care for the cat......whose vacation is the the dog leaving town.

Look for car top carriers if you go looking, they are available in soft and hard. Of course then you need the big crate also :yes:

Now how else may we spend your paycheck? maybe a portable DVD to watch movies along the way :eek:

We use a hard top carrier from Sears when we use The Explorer to make more room ,works great.Hope you have a great trip.

lol.....if it stops my son and the dog from getting embroiled it's worth it! Or, would it be cheaper to get ME a roof top carrier? I do love the outdoors.
