Help! Can't find a site for Girl Scout trip

Hi all! I haven't been around in a while. Last year we did a trip to Mexico and this year so far a trip to Disneyland, so our camping has been limited for a while, but now we are back on the trail!

Right now I have been charged with booking a couple of sites for our Girl Scout troop's 1st campout and I can't find a thing! My two possible dates are May 1-2 or May 29-30. Nothing at Inks, Ped Falls, Guad River, McKinney, Bastrop, Buescher, or even Palmetto. Now all this is from Reserve America. Should I try another option...like *gasp* picking up the phone to call TPWD, or emailing them?

Can anyone think of another option that's maybe not TPWD that's within an hour of Austin? I'm thinking maybe Lake Georgetown or something like that? I think nice bathrooms are important...

Your advice and expertise is appreciated!!! Missed y'all and hope to be around more!

    ~Amy

Okay, Troop. I must be a twit. I was specifying "tent" sites and I swear it kept saying none! Now I see many when I just use "any camping site". Thanks!!!

I appreciated your pm too about hiking. These girls are Brownies so we need not too rigorous! Thanks again!

You can NOT go by what is on line I would try calling ( always the best in my book)They will do a search for you and let you know what they have for that many people for the dates you want. What you want to ask for is probably the "group area" I know Palmetto has one that will hold a bunch. We see scouts there all the time. i think Guad River has one too. They will know. Good luck and have a great time!!

Don't know if you would want to drive about 2 hours...but Goliad State Park is very nice. We used to live in Victoria and spent many hours camping and hiking there. Plus, lots of history with the mission and presidio. They have several campsites plus screened shelters that are very nice.

Been meaning to check back in and thank you all for your responses. We wound up at McKinney. I think it'll be great. It's weekend in May, so now we'll pray for nice weather!

Re: Help! Can't find a site for Girl Scout trip

Usually group sites are NOT near a bathroom. Sometimes there is a porta-potty near but that just won't fly with GIRL scouts ( or Campermom).

What about Bastrop, Buescher, Lockhart, Palmetto, or South Llano? Just keep trying. Calling Austin to reserve is a great idea, just don't call on Mondays. Be aware, that you may be calling headquarters, those people who take your call probably have never even seen a park, nevermind camp at any. They can only tell you what you can read on the park's website. WildTexas gives you REAL information, the stuff you want to know.

Once you've got reservations, contact the park and ask if a ranger can spend time with the group. Work on scout achievements such as wildlife conservation or a service project.

    Have fun

Re: Help! Can't find a site for Girl Scout trip

We were just at McKinney a few weeks ago. Had a great time, the trees are really starting to bloom. This park has a few sites that work great for buddy sites ( we were in one with friends). Call the park directly and tell them how many are in your group ( I think you get a discount for being scouts, not sure though). Most of the time you see scouts at the parks they are all next to each other.

    Have a blast!!!!
