To add to the mystic and camp fire tales......Texas is full of history and historic places with colorful pasts and many stories and legends.......
would like to hear experiences of others......any favorite camps you visit....tales you tell or stories you've heard......

its too bad that no one has replied to this post... i would have loved to hear some stories. since i'm from far away, and wont be here that long, the chances of me contributing are very small. maybe someday I'll make something up. Story telling is such a lost art- and i'm no good at it, either- but it would be nice to revive it a little bit. camping and story telling do go hand in hand....

Reviving the thread for Halloween...

One of my favorite websites is The Handbook of Texas Online which contains historical information on everything from Texas lakes and rivers to ghost towns and pioneer homesteads.

Something to whet your appetites:And on the origin of Texas place names, here are some legends:

Re: Ghostly stories and Haunted Places

Well, this is an old thread but I'll bite anyway. I've had two supernatural Padre/Corpus experiences.

The first thing was pretty mild. I was in the ladies room of the USS Lexington, when I had a feeling that I wasn't alone. It definitely felt like a ghostly presence of some sort was watching me wash my hands. Of course I was alone, which didn't help matters much. It wasn't anything that felt really scary, but it was an interesting incident. I have since read that apparitions supposedly prefer damp places...which may explain why "they" may like the ladies room.

The second experience, however, felt almost sinister. It happened while my boyfriend and I were camping on the beach. BF was sitting near the campfire and I was just opening the tent about 20 feet away. I had unzipped the tent and was reaching in to turn on the lamp when I was literally scared stiff. I couldn't move for at least half a minute and actually had tears running down my face. I hadn't seen anything, it was pitch black anyway, but it honestly felt as if the devil himself was in the tent with me.

I quickly got what I needed and got the hell out of there to try and figure out/explain what happened, and to get a hug, only to find that my boyfriend was also scared silly. Turns out, he had been screaming my name but I hadn't heard him because of the sound of the surf. He said he was just sitting there in front of the fire when the hair on his neck stood on end. He half-turned his head to see a huge, eerie, black shadow pass directly behind him and travel up the beach. He was also too scared to move for a few seconds, until he got up and ran to get a light and scream for me.

I will be happy if I never feel that truly frightening presence again and for all of you camping on Padre . . .
BEWARE OF THE BLACK SHADOW ! !
