Re: garner?

Personally, I or rather , we prefer New Garner. I like the Live Oak camping area. Try to get on the water side(left) of the road. Sites from where you enter the area til just beyond the bathrooms are well shaded. Sites on the inner circle close to the bathroom, are mostly no shade. The sites on the inner circle , past the bathrooms, have good shade.
The River Crossing area is nice. They border a drainage area so if you have little ones you might not want to camp here. But, kids play like crazy through this area. It is very close to the river with small rapids upriver and plenty of shallows by camp.
On the Old Garner side, The shade is sparse for water and electricity.
It is very close to Rock Beach - ropes and trees to have fun on along with the paddle boats and other rentals. The Pavillion isn't too far away. Just a short hike.

If you get there, and it isn't crowded, ask the park people if you could drive around and find a site that you like. Have fun and enjoy!!

Re: garner?

I vote for New Garner too. When we went back in June, OG was just too crowded for my taste. However, now that kids are back in school & summer's effectively over, that might not be a problem.

We stayed in the Rio Frio area. I liked it. I always ask the rangers for a shady site close to the bathrooms. They know the shady sites. IF it's not crowded/busy, some will give you the ranger station phone number & if you have a cell phone (AND can get reception -- which is an iffy thing in the SP's!!) they will let you pick a site and then just call them with what you picked.

Or -- you can ask them to give you a list of numbers that aren't taken, pick one, drop your trailer, and then go back to the ranger station & tell them the number. They're usually very accomodating, and (I'm sure  ) used to picky camping folk!!

Re: garner?

Just got home from our trip to garner ,man it was great! We stayed at #332 and it was on the water,it was nice with plenty of room. The park was packed the first two days, then began to empty to about 3/4 full.My daughter was in heaven, our 3 year old had a ruff time getting a little scraped up.I can't wait for our next trip there, this was for a family reunion and tied up alot of our time. The next trip will be more "the kids time".Thanks for the reports.
