First time camping near Dallas

I visited this site for the first time today and am impressed with the number and quality of responses....

My wife and I wanted to try tent camping and are looking for some info about nice and safe places. We live in North Dallas (about 10 miles north of downtown) and are looking for a place in a 100 mile radius for a weekend stay.

We have never camped before!!

Any advice would be appreciated.

The only places we've been up there is Lake Mineral Wells and Dinosaur Valley. I'd got check out Mineral Wells. Check thru the TPWD for what's close, then read the posts on here for specifics. Tyler has a good rep for being a nice park but I've never seen it.

Cedar Hill looks to be the closest state park to "the big D". Another option would be to try some of the Corps of Engineer's parks near Lake Lewisville. We were at Hickory Creek COE park a few weekends back for a shakedown trip. Nice park.

Ray Roberts Lake has some nice parks. Juniper Point on Lake Texoma is really nice.

Thumbs up Re: First time camping near Dallas

We stayed at Eisenhower State Park (just outside of Denison) for a couple of nights on our way to Arkansas. We will definitely go back. The park was large, clean and the people were nice. There is quite a bit of water activities at ESP due to being on Lake Texoma. We wore out the kids with some hiking, swimming, fishing and kayaking. There is a marina on site and I believe there were some boat houses for rent but not sure if they are through the park or the marina. The camping areas were very nice; some sites had tent pads but can’t vouch for all.
