East Texas Camping

Hey all,
My family and I looking to camp some where in east texas. We're looking for a state park with campsites that have lots of trees and good privacy (not so close together). We're also looking for a park with good hiking. It would also be nice to have decent shore/pier fishing to catch some pan fish for lunch. I was thinking either Tyler or Caddo. Any site reccomendations?

Also any site reccomendations for Lost Maples? We're looking to go there towards the end of Oct or Early Nov.

Thanks!

Re: East Texas Camping

Tyler is a great park for hiking and a little fishing.
Rusk is also nice but lacks longer hikes.
You might consideer Ratcliff at the Davy Crockett N.F.??

You will be lucky to get a site at Lost Maples when the leaves are turning. You may want to start booking soon???

Re: East Texas Camping

We're up in Commerce, heading to Lake Mineral Wells this weekend, then down to Inks Lake 2 weeks later. We'll report back. We're a 1.5 hours from Tyler, we'd like see it. Not much water here, kind of why we're heading elsewhere.

Re: East Texas Camping

As far as Maples goes, if you haven't already booked, you are prob out of luck... unless you go into primitive camp mode. Garner may also be booked. Both of these usually require a year in advance reservation. At least that is what I've experienced. There is a private owned RV park directly across the Frio from Garner that we are checking out come Thanksgiving. Not exactly what we are used to but anything in the Hill Country will do me good right now. Its close enough to Lost maples that we can daytrip there for either a short or long hike. And, like I said Garner is just across the river. If you're interested in the RV park, let me know and I'll get you what info I have.

Our fav sites at Lost Maples are any between 13 and 17. 13,14,and 15 have trails down to the river. 16 is the most "alone" and 17 nestles into a hillside.
