Dinosaur Valley State Park

Hi Yall!
We're finally taking the plunge & going camping with our girls (ages 4 & 6) for the first time! We'd like to camp at Dinosaur Valley in Glen Rose during the weekend of Oct. 24th.

Any recommendations on the best shady spot to tent camp? Also, we'd like to be semi-close to the latrines. I'm hoping for warm weather so we can still look for dinosaur tracks in the river.

Thanks for your help!
~Kelly

Re: Dinosaur Valley State Park

First highly recommend a water electric site and reservations as that is a small park. The hike from the primative sites its quite long. to the rest rooms
By October you will competing against campers and scouts of all kinds so book soon. (call the 512/389-8900 number BUT NOT ON A MONDAY ITS ALWAYS BUSY or email rather than go online)

sites 2-11 and perhaps 42-44 fit are close and are mostly shaded here is a link to the map

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publicat...p4503_094r.pdf

Recomend walking the short walk from along campsite 17 to view site 3 then 2 and later walk or drive to the overview and view site 1. Its a short trail along the river and its a easy walk.

At early sundown walk up to the end of the driving circle site 46 or so and look for deer in the meadow, they usually hang out there, can't guarantee it but we have seen them ever time.

We are North of Dallas also, we take Highway 67 off 35 to get there.

If you can not get a spot in Dino Valley try Cleburne. Short drive through the back roads to Glen Rose and you can still see the tracks. Kids might also enjoy Fossil Rim wildlife park if you have never been. It is just a few miles from Glen Rose.

At any rate, enjoy the great outdoors.

Thank you for the replies!

Troop198 - I knew you'd be one of the first to reply!

I have one more year until I'm taking my Brownies on a camping trip so I feel I need to get busy with feeling confident on camping again. Especially with learning how to cook simple meals.

We take 67 to 281 to my in-laws who live near Canyon Lake & Glen Rose has always been my favorite town due to the elevation.

Thanks again!

Re: Dinosaur Valley State Park

I like Dino and always have. But $25 per day plus $5 per day, per person over 12 for a "power and water" site is a bit steep for me. I think Cleburne is just as nice (if not nicer) at $16 per day and $3 per day, per person over 12 for the same site. Plus you'll be more likely to be able to get a site and the park tends to be less crowded.

Just my 2-cents.

Happy Camping!

Re: Dinosaur Valley State Park

Well, I'm a bit disappointed.....I tried making reservations for Dinosaur Valley & there were booked. So I ended up making reservations for Ray Roberts Lake - Johnson Branch. We've never been there so we thought we'd try that out. Plus, Oct. 25th they have a "Fire Side Chat" - storytelling, flora/fauna, cultural history, etc. Thought that will be interesting for the girls to hear.

I'll let yall know how it turns out after the trip!

Johnson Branch is a nice little park. Not as big as Isle Du Boise, but generally not as crowded either.

Enjoy your trip and do let us know how it goes.
