Car camping at Brazos Bend SP

I'm glad I found this site. It's very well put together.
Anyway I am planning a car camping trip soon with a group of friends. My job is to find a place for us to car camp. I recently went to Stubblefield Lake and had a good time despite not being able to hike due to hunters being on the prowl. I didn't feel it was safe.
I've never been to BBSP. How is it? Are the hiking trails nice? Are the campsites set up like this?

Our cars were about 10 feet away from our tent.

Lastly, are campfires allowed?

Thanks and I hope to learn a bunch on this site.

We used to trailer camp there when I lived in Houston. The sites are nicely wooded and fairly spacious. The Pecans should be dropping and many people frequent the park for them. Weekends are usually booked solid.
The hiking trails are a little open for the most part. Of course the big attraction is the alligators. They may be lying low if it is cool. Nice observatory which is sometimes open to the public. All in all one of our favorite parks.
The drive is open prarie. Our first trip we were rolling our eyes. When we got to the park a woodland oasis opened and we were really impressed. You may find more on at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/ Good luck!

I feel your frustration for not being able to hike in Sam Houston National Forest during hunting season. It's not fair but the hunters will claim that they pay all the fees so they're entitled.
If hiking is an important part of your camping trip, I'd suggest Lake Houston State Park outside of New Caney. They have a very nice trail system with some primitive campsites for backpackers.

I also wouldn't rule out Huntsville. It has a great tent camping area. Also the approx. 8 mile hike around Lake Raven. No Hunters in the State Park either!!! Fires are allowed, firewood is sold and they have Mini golf and a store, canoe rentals as well as paddle boats.

Thanks for the tips. I have Huntsville on my list of places to possibly camp at. We will be camping most likely after Thanksgiving.

Thumbs up

My husband and I go to Brazos Bend a lot. It's a great place to take pictures of birds, landscapes, alligators, etc. The trails are great. We have camped one time in a shelter that the park rents for about $20-25. The other campsites for tents and RV's looked a great deal like your picture. If you are at all interested in photography or just hiking this is an outstanding spot.

Well it looks like we won't be camping at BBSP this time around. We managed to get the last two campsites at Buescher SP. I checked out the facility map of the park and it looks great. I like the idea of a nice big lake in the middle. I'll let you guys know how the trip turned out.

Beuscher is a nice park. A little more open than Bastrop but that won't be a problem this time of year.
Bastrop is the lost pines region. The western most stand of pines. Real pretty and the campsites are in a pine grove that stands in a valley. Take a drive if you get the chance. Have a good time.
Great little old town section at Bastrop.

Copus, I think I've been to the old town in Bastrop. I don't have a map or remember but is Bastrop close to Warda? I used to mountain bike at Bluff Creek Ranch. We drove somewhere and ate at a restaurant in a old town/square like area. Couldn't remember where it was.

I do not think you are in the same town. Of course most Texas squares are a little similiar. Bastrop is a little different being on the banks of the river.

Bastrop is about 35 miles west of Warda. Bring your bikes if you like Bluff Creek. Buescher is about 2 miles from Rocky Hill Ranch. Very similar terrain to Bluff Creek but a hard 1 mile climb at the beginning. Warda is between Giddings and LaGrange on Hwy 77. It was probably one of those towns you remember.
