camping this weekend within 3 hours of Houston

Any thoughts on the best place to camp within a few hours of Houston?

Thanks so much for the help!

Re: camping this weekend within 3 hours of Houston

Easter weekend? I'm sad to say that I'm not sure you're going to find a site if you're beginning your search today.

Here are most of the parks near Houston.

I suspect Brazos Bend State Park will be booked for Easter weekend (it's a terrific park, with numerous campsites), and I haven't personally camped at many other Houston-area parks.

I'm sure some of our East Texas folk (residents and/or frequent visitors) can chime in with additional guidance/information.

Good luck!

Re: camping this weekend within 3 hours of Houston

We camped at Lake Livingston last month & it was nice. Crowded at the campsite but not in the park. Lots of places to bike & horses to ride. Lake level was down 5 feet. They told us not because of the drought but because the dam suffered hurricane damage in Sept. & they have to keep the level down below the 'cracks'......

Like the other posted said, probably not much available at this late date for Easter Weekend.....

Try Port Lavaca, Port O'Connor and Indianola Beach.

You can camp on the beach at Indianola. There are some bathrooms and picnic tables. Get there early.

I just remembered this one: LCRA park at Matagorda.

He is risen

Re: camping this weekend within 3 hours of Houston

Don't know whqat "part" of Houston, as sometimes 3 hours isn't enough to get from one part of town to the other. Don't get scared away from some of the nicer parks in the Hill Country--I have never been turned away from a SP on ANY Holiday--there are ALWAYS cancellations. Just ask the rangers what time you should check back in with them. Guadalupe River SP in notorious, IMHO, for "selling out" online, only to have numerous sites open up. I asume this is because it gets so many locals whose plans change at the last minute, and it's no biggie to re-set your camp date a few weeks down the line.

Good luck.

Re: camping this weekend within 3 hours of Houston

Could've sworn I posted this yesterday.... but....

Don't know what part of Houston you're in--sometimes it takes 3 hours just to get from one end of that city to the other! That said...

...don't get scared away from trying some of the great hill counyrt SP's about 3 hours or so from Houston (Katy, at least) I have never been shut out of a SP, even though they say they are sold out on the websites. There are always cancellations, you know. Just ask the rangers what time to check into the park if there are no-shows. I have done this several times at Guadalupe River SP. My theory is that a lot of SA locals reserve spots, then cancel because of last minute plans changes, and it isn't that hard for them (us) to hit the park the next week or so (I've been in that spot, too....)

have fun.
