Camping / Tubing Combo on San Marcos

Hello all! This is my first post to these forums.

This weekend I would like to go tent camping / tubing along the San Marcos River. Any suggestions about the best way to go about this. I have never been before and searching the internet isn't turning up much useful information.

Supposedly Palmetto State Park is set beside the San Marcos River and has primitive campsites, but I'm not sure that this is a part of the river that people tube down.

So far this has been my only lead, and well Palmetto State Park is in Gonzales and not really in San Marcos, so I just wanted to see if anyone has any experience with this type of trip.

Thanks in advance for your help / suggestions!

Geremy

Re: Camping / Tubing Combo on San Marcos

Welcome aboard, Geremy! Hope you can find what you need here. I would normally say that you in for a great time tubing on Texas rivers. Many do and enjoy it greatly. I don't tube but often get my 'yak out on local lakes.

Right now I'm not sure that tubing or boating is in anyones best interest. Many, if not most of our lakes and rivers are swollen beyond what would be thought of as safe. I know that a good number of lakes are "closed" at this time to all boat traffic. Also, there are a fair number of our State Parks that are "closed" or have limited access. You may want to call and check before making any plans.

I hope that this has been of some help and again, welcome to the group.

Happy Camping!

Just an idea of how the levels are right now due to all the rain:

Tubing on the Guadalupe River !!!

** Important Notice **

Due to heavy recent rainfall, the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers has announced that they
will be Closing the Guadalupe River to Tubing.
On Monday morning, July 2nd, the river flow
will be increased up to 4,000 cfs through Friday,
July 6th, at which time the levels will be
re-evaluated and hopefully go back to
600cfs for the weekend of July 7th & 8th.

Re: Camping / Tubing Combo on San Marcos

Sorry I can't help you too much. We're headed to Canyon Lake tomorrow to spend the holiday with my in-laws. Due to high waters we'll be enjoying Schlitterbahn & Comal river in New Braunfels.

San Marcos river is really pretty. Very clear! But the current can be swift. When I went to college there I would take a dip in the river almost everyday. But if you jump in at one stair well more than likely you end up pretty fast at the next stair well that's 20 ft. or more away within seconds.

Re: Camping / Tubing Combo on San Marcos

I have written a post about how to find information on road, weather, lakes and rivers.

As far as the San Marcos River, it is as it always was. A little faster flowing. It comes directly from the aquifer, so unless it has rained in San Marcos, the water is crystal clear.

Note: Children and weak swimmers need to wear life jackets. If you go past Rio Vista (where the shuttle picks you up), then you need to know what you are doing. Drop me a note on my RV blog and I will be happy to help you.

There is an RV park called Wolf Creek Ranch on the San Marcos River, and is located at 19577 San Marcos Hwy, San Marcos, TX 78666 (Phone 512-392-7044).

The closest RV Park to the San Marcos Outlet Mall is Canyon Trail RV.

Pecan Park is on the San Marcos River and you can float from City Park in San Marcos to it. See note above.

Leisure camp (no website) is located in Fentress, Texas on the San Marcos. You cannot float down to here from San Marcos. (512) 488-2563 leisure@thrifty.net

One place people never seem to mention is the Blanco River. At Five Mile Dam is a wonderful place to swim unless it has been raining.

For pictures and information see this post.

Lockhart State Park and McKinney Stae Park are close enough to commute to San Marcos, Austin, and New Braunfels.
