Camping Mustang Island

Hello,

I live in Iowa and will be heading to Texas for spring break with my family. A little back ground info:
I have 3 boys 3, 6, & 7, and of coarse my wife.
We camp in a 33 foot 5th wheel.
Spring break for kids is mid march, we will be taking 10 days
Water & Dump station are a must, have generator if needed.

Ok, I have punched up Mustang Island and am thinking about go there to stay for 3 or 4 days.

1. Which is better to camp at the reservable area or the other area.
2. what other areas would you recommend for camping where we can fish swim and do sight seeing.
3. I keep seeing that Alchool is not allowed at the state parks, is this true.

Any information would be great. Thank you so much.

Re: Camping Mustang Island

First off, welcome to Wild Texas! Hope you find what your looking for here. Next, an advance welcome to Texas! You'll find most of us here to be very friendly and we ALL love our state!

Not going to be able to help allot with your questions as I've only been to Mustang Island once for a very short time. Texas Gulf Coast does not suit me that well. DW and I much prefer the Texas Hill Country or the Piney Woods of east Texas. I will address your question about alcohol in Texas State Parks. The rule is there and will be enforced, as needed, to control those who can't control themselves. In other words, "moderation" and "discretion" are the watch words of the day .

I would suggest on your drive down that you catch Hwy. 281 somewhere just south and west of Ft. Worth and follow it to San Antonio (as opposed to following I-35). Good road and much better scenery. Don't know exactly when your trip is but Texas wildflowers are in full bloom about mid-April. Great display on that road! If your interested, let me know and I can help you with routing. Even when wildflowers are not in bloom, I and many others prefer this route to I-35.

Hope I haven't scared you off with my responce. Not my intention at all. Hope you come down and have a great time. If I can help in any way, feel free to ask.

Happy Camping!

Re: Camping Mustang Island

We have camped (if you want to call it that) at Mustang Island SP. Not much in the way of "real camping" IMO. We stayed in the water-electric area. There was a sheltered picnic table and stand-up BBQ, but no fire rings. The area is little more than a parking lot.

OK, those are the negatives. As for the positives, it’s a good place to set down for a couple of days if you want to have some fun at the beach...which we did. The restrooms and showers were very well kept. And when we no longer wanted to be out in the hot sun, we were able to retreat to our air conditioned trailer (thanks to having hookups! ) Corpus Christi is right across the JFK causeway for day trips to the Texas Aquarium or the USS Lexington.

Depending on what you intend to do, MISP can be a great place to hang out.

Re: Camping Mustang Island

"MissionCamper" summed it up real well with what he said about the camping(?). "Water/Electric" sites are pretty much like camping in a parking lot. That's why we stayed such a short time. Just didn't suit us. Nothing wrong with it, if that's what you like. Just not our idea of "camping". Ended up cancelling our reservations and headed back up to the Hill Country.

Happy Camping!

Re: Camping Mustang Island

Thanks for the info. I will reconsider and may just make it a day or two stop over to go to the beach and corpus christi. What I really want is someplace to camp where we can visit the beach, have large sites, electric/water a dump station at the campground and a Playground for downtime with the kids. Any sugestions would be great.
