Re: Camping in Garner during Thanksgiving
We usually stay at Lost Maples for Thanksgiving but were late in getting reservations last year. We didn't bother trying for Garner sites...we figured it would be booked so we stayed across the Frio at Parkview Riverside. We went over to hike at Garner one day and was very surprised to see a LOT of empty campsites and shelters in Old Garner. New Garner was pretty full, though.
Weatherwise, it could not have been any better. Nice and warm during the day but cold enough at night that a really well insulated sleeping bag was just the right ticket. I have found that you need to go prepared for most any kind of weather. Be sure to check the Weather Channel often the week before your trip. I've seen ice and snow and I've worn shorts and a Tee. Long Johns are a must but you may be in shorts before the sun gets too high in the sky. Just be prepared.
We'll be staying in a shelter in Old Garner this Thanksgiving, and a spring break trip for my HS senior son and his buddies is planned (they'll be tent camping in New Garner). We'll be staying across the river at Parkview just to be close but not too close so that they feel they are "on their own".
