Re: Camping with fire!!!!!!

In general unless there is an enforced burn ban there are a number of hike in parks reviewed on this site where you can have a fire. Here is a link to the state parks, some in the area you asked about. TPWD: Campsites

potable water might be a different for example hill country sna notes

Be sure to bring drinking water; Potable water is not available;
All water must be treated.
Camp fires permitted in fire rings only, except during burn bans.

TPWD: Hill Country State Natural Area

just read through the parks on this site and on the state parks site:yes:

Hi Jeffspicoli,

I am afraid I have not camped in that area so I don't have anything to offer. However, I am curious to know if you found any good places.

Best,

Re: Camping with fire!!!!!!

I am of course partial to the Frio Area and plenty of great places to camp, however not sure about the level of primitive you are looking for. I could be wrong but the really primitive places are probably people's land (private). I remember Boy Scout Camps fitting your criteria but probably only for them. You may or may know the Frio Area bc of Garner State Park. It's about an hour and half from S.A. and definitely worth checking out regardless.

However, you will have to check out the Burn Ban.. it's off and on here lately.

Good Luck

Choderus..

That's great! Thanks for sharing... Is that an official guide?

Edit:

(nvm) Happened to read that it's a public service.. regardless it's a great guide and if kept up regularly.. it can be the unofficial official guide!

Not really. If you read the "Disclaimer" it states that the ban (or its lifting) comes from individual county judges or county commisioners. Have noted over the years that county judges can be notoriously fickle in their decisions. As the disclaimer states, it is best to contact the individual county or park your intending to visit. When in doubt, I call the park the day I'm going to load the firewood. It has saved me work on more then one occasion!

Just my !

Happy Camping!

Re: Camping with fire!!!!!!

Turn Key,

Thanks, actually I edited my comment/reply after seeing that it's a public service but I do appreciate the elaborate explanation.

We have to call the sheriff's office when burning trash to make sure but would be nice if there was an "official" guide to go by.. I'm sure this would take the burden off the dept from calls everyday with this question.

Thanks again..

Exactly. The map is updated daily but I think most counties in Texas only choose to lift or renew a ban on a weekly basis. So it really is best to always call the park directly. You might find that the county has a ban but the park still allows some fires or charcoal cooking.
