camping: down river in big bend and padre island

hi, i'm hoping to go the may 21 weekend out first to big bend where i'm hoping to do some canoing down either through colorado canyon or mariscala canyon and was wondering if anyone had done something of the sort before. i'm hoping to camp along the river one or two nights and i've read that we need to rent or buy some type of portable toilets. does anyone know how that works at big bend or anywhere? also, some general tips about storing equipment and whatnot on canoes and at big bend would help also. it says that solis and talley (the pickup and dropoff) locations are kinda iffy in security of your cars, is that true?

also, after big bend i'm hoping to hit up padre island. we have a honda cr-v, not sure if that would be able to hit the four wheel drive areas but somewhere as far from humans as possible. i'm an avid photographer and i'm hoping to get some night shots too. i've never camped on the beach either, so was wondering if there was anything i might need. i've read some posts about padre island and needing reflectors and heavier objects to keep the tent down. i was just wondering if i might be able to find some objects on the island if i don't want to bring any.

Re: camping: down river in big bend and padre island

I have neverd canoed any of the canyons in Big Bend, but I would really be interested in reading a trip report if you do go as it is something I am raring to go do now. This is something I recently fell in love with and would love to go check out something like that - I have only canoed the Guadalupe for a couple of days so far. As far as information, I found a few things when I did a search on google for big bend national park canoeing. Sorry I can't be much help - yet! I can tell that if you have never been to BBNP you will fall in love with it! It is an amazing place!

So anyone who does have some experience with canoeing in Big Bend, fill us in....

Please post a trip report if you do make the BBNP canyon canoeing trip!!!! Good luck and have fun!

i would almost say it would be too hot by then. i just got back from a trip this weekend, it was in the mid 90's already, and being out on the water could literally be a killer

We camped at Padre last October and I must say I was a bit disappointed with the stargazing opportunities. Maybe it was just a fluke, but I've also stayed at Mustang Island a few times...with similar results. Indeed, the best views of the heavens for me have been well inland and not along the Gulf coast.

I don't believe I've ever seen the Milky Way while at Padre. I might be wrong. I remember doing some stargazing, but the down island traffic (headlights) combined with any city glow from Corpus Christi, and now the new offshore oil rigs that are just barely offshore, it's a little suboptimal for stargazing. Sort of like the place my mom and I viewed Halley's comet from outside north San Antonio -- it's now so overgrown, most people have probably forgotten those few points of light represent a miniscule percentage of the actual stars and planets visible in our night sky.

I miss stargazing. Thank goodness the FAA is lobbying to get some teeth in its legislation to ban Earth orbiting advertising, some of which could appear as bright and as large as the moon. No kidding, there are actually firms pursuing licenses to launch billboards in space. Talk about ruining stargazing...

the best stargazing experience i've ever had was a cold january night in the hot springs in Big Bend. you could easilly see the milky way, it was almost too bright to see other stars around it. and so many shooting stars
