Camping along the Rio Frio

I met a guy last week who said he has camped along the Frio River and as I search this site, I see there are many places. For those of you who have had experience with some of these sites, maybe you could suggest one or that suits me.

My wife and I and maybe a couple close friends would like to find an out-of-the-way place that is not crowded for some tent camping. It must dog friendly and have a descent area to setup a tent. I can maintain a leash on the dog, but it would be great if he could get in the water too. It can be VERY primitive as we require no electricity or water.

Thanks for your time!

Re: Camping along the Rio Frio

JD, getting a site may be a problem. Most of the campgrounds book months in advance. You may try Garner State Park. Try to get in new garner at persimmon hill. I believe the sites have water only. Persimmon Hill is very shaded and most of the sites are fairly far apart. Rio Frio in new garner has water only in the lower areas close to the water. The only drawback is the spots are mostly open, with scattered cedar trees for shade. Check out the parks and wildlife website for a map of the park. The park is dog friendly and playing in the water is tolerated. Good luck and happy camping!!

Re: Camping along the Rio Frio

Thanks very much. I will check into my wife's schedule and see what I can come up with. Maybe if we can get in before school starts, we might find an open spot.

Is there any thing else similar on a different river near San Antonio? I don't have to camp on the Frio, but would like somewhere within a few hours of SA.

Re: Camping along the Rio Frio

Thank you! I went to the reserve america site and used thier search tool. That will also help me as I didn't realize they had the feature. Now I am getting excited! Thanks again for your help, things are different here than I am used to in CO.

Here are some posts about the area.

Guadalupe River is not real close to the Frio, but is a wonderful trip on its own.

Re: Camping along the Rio Frio

srds, we've stayed at that campground, too. Very nice especially if your site backs up to the cliff over the Frio.

j-man, there's a family run place downriver from Garner called Neal's Lodge. They have some tent sites right next to the river but floods have really altered the original sites. I think there's one screened in shelter, too. They are primitive but you can drive (very slowly!!!) to each. There are not many and finding a level spot might be a trick. There are showers and flushies close by. Nothng fancy but hey! It's on the Frio! That makes up for a multitude of things!! they do offer cabins, and RV sites across the street. They are home to one of the best swimming holes in Texas. They offer shuttles to get you upriver for tubin (which they rent). Neat place and very relaxed.

Here's the link: http://www.nealslodges.com/index.htm

Tent sites are not mentioned but I've seen tents there. You'd have to call. Good luck and happy camping!

Re: Camping along the Rio Frio

riverrat - That sounds like what I am after. I will see what I can dig up on the web or give them a call. My wife's schedule should slow down soon, so I hope I can get a trip planned for us and the doggie! Thanks!
