Does anyone know of any cabin-type camping places (that allow dogs!) anywhere along any routes from Amarillo-Lubbock-Abilene? Or any spot that is about a 6-9 hour drive northwest of Austin?
Last week, I drove up from central Texas to snowy Colorado to visit family. Furn road trip with the dog; stayed at Abilene State Park and a NM park along the way (and a Best Western when the weather got bad and the car got cramped).
I am heading back down tomorrow, and was planning on camping at Caprock Canyon Park (or maybe Palo Duro) Weds. night. But the weather looks maybe not so good (according to forecasts which of course are often wrong).
I don't want to stay at a motel except as a last resort, but thunderstorm camping with dog, in either tent or Toyota Corolla, is not much fun. TXPWD parks have lots of cabins but no dogs allowed inside. :>(
Extensive googling has not turned up much -- I thought maybe someone here had a suggestion. If not, we'll figure it out as we go along; always do.
Thanks!

To Camp or Not to Camp -Lets go Camping- Have Fun
Caprock Canyon is a great place to camp! The weather looks like it will be just fine, a little nip in the air, but no rain in the forcast. Palo Duro does have a few cabins on site that are great too. I think I'd plan for either one!
Thanks for the suggestion -- I had planned to camp at Caprock if the weather stayed good (which it mostly did) and actually was going to check out the KOA Kamping Kabins if the weather was bad. (I used to tent camp occasionally at KOA many years ago on trips, and the cabins look like a slight improvement. It is still a KOA, but at least you are often close to a park, they are pretty cheap, and a step up from a tent or a car.)
As it turned out, I got a nasty case of hacking, painful bronchitis right before I left and felt pretty horrible, so I opted to just do the drive back as quickly as possible and stayed in a hotel on the way back.
Oh well.
(This Abilene SP yurts really do look very cool -- I camped at that park on my drive out, in a tent site, and walked over to take a look at the yurts tucked in there by the old WCC-era screened wooden shelters. I would absolutely look into staying in them on a future trip if I had a few people and no dog(s) with me. Also, the Abilene SP bathrooms are far and away the cleanest. most pristine public bathrooms I have EVER seen!)
Oh Gosh, so sorry to hear about your cough!! Maybe next time you can come back through and enjoy the area! We really liked camping at Palo Duro. I don't think I would camp either there or Caprock Canyon during the dead of summer though! Glad I could help ya though.![]()
