Welcome to the board.
What type activites are you looking for at the park, or to be close to? That information would help us to help you. A wide range of parks that I would consider being 'close' to DFW.

Re: Best state parks

Also, where are you and how far do you want to drive. DFW is a pretty good sized chunk of realestate and we have a fair number of parks that we think of as "in our area". A little info, if you please:yes:?

Happy Camping!

well 100-150 mile radius of North Dallas. As it will be cold swimming is out but just clean well kept. I think it was a park on Cedar Creek that looked like a scene out of a Jason movie. Not going there again
Nice playgrounds for the kids

I believe your thinking of Cedar Hill SP on Joe Pool Lake. If so, I pretty well agree with your eval. Little too close to the south side of Dallas for my liking. Could be a great park, but...

For my money, here would be my choices for you.

Tyler SP:
TPWD: Tyler State Park

Ray Roberts Lake, Isle du Bois Unit:
TPWD: Ray Roberts Lake State Park

Dinosaur Valley SP:
TPWD: Dinosaur Valley State Park

There are a number of really great parks in the Hill Country but they ar a bit out of your range, even more so since your coming from the north side of Dallas. If you decide on Dinosaur Valley, catch 67 on the south side of Dallas following it past Cleburne (using the by-pass) and then on to Glen Rose.

Hope this helps and feel free to ask more questions.

Happy Camping!

Re: Best state parks

We are from Plano and in less than 2 1/2 hours with a trailer you can get to a number of nice parks, (quicker with a tent )we enjoy Cooper Lake South SP, Lake Tawokani (LT) SP, and both Ray Roberts SP (RR) units. LT and RR (south) are the closest of those four. RR offers bike hike trails that are concrete. Also offers trail hikes/walks. Of those 4 LT would be my first recomendation, for being close it is usually underused. I did a report recently on this site. It does not have a playground if that is important. RR offers the most to do with the trails, and playgrounds, fish piers and more. Need more let us know.

Re: Best state parks

We love Ray Roberts the best but its been packed this summer, it will probably be our park of choice. Cooper Lake we went once and the raccoons were the worst. It was pretty obvious people had been feeding the animals there. They were not afraid of humans at all and tried to get in the cars and tents. We went back the next year and it seemed better, we do enjoy seeing the occasional deer as the kids really like it. Havent been to Dinosaur Valley since I was a kid. We camped at the former Rusk state park because we love trains and it was nice to hear the steam locomotive start up and return each day. Anywhere we go must have electrical since my daughter has to keep her insulin refridgerated and we have one of those Coleman coolers that does that.

Thanks

Re: Best state parks

Unfortunately the masses have discovered Ray Roberts, including the once under utilized Johnson Branch side. As a alternative try Tawakoni or maybe Purtis Creek. Tyler is a beautiful park, but again is hard to get into unless you book well in advance. If you are going around Thanksgiving then Daingerfield might be a good choice or Martin Creek. Both of those are pushing the milage. If you wanted to go just a little further, try staying in one of the cabins at Lake Brownwood. Those cabins built back in the '30s are really nice in a peaceful wooded setting.

Re: Best state parks

Three of our favorite State Parks are Cooper, Lake Tawakoni, and Tyler State Park. Tyler has full hook ups but the others do not. Wished all State parks had full hook ups

Head over to Goliad State Park. When we lived in Victoria, we used to camp out there frequently. Very nice park. Neat nature trail. And, the history of Goliad is just incredible.

Re: Best state parks

Well, it has been a while since I've posted here, but I'd just like to add that Tyler State Park is at the top of our list for camping! Now keep in mind that it's not just because we live only 20 minutes away (easy on the gas!!) nor is it because they have FULL hookup (VERY NICE!), but it's because there are lots of great spaces (we like Big Pine) and the folks that come there are really friendly. We've never had a bad time there yet...not even when Mr. Ike caused the park to close and we all had to be evacuated....but hey....that just adds excitement, amen?!
We'll be there again in a couple of weeks...anyone here headed that way in October??
Be blessed,
Marti
