Best Sites @ Pedernales Falls ????

Going to Pedernalas Falls during last weekend of February and since you can't reserve spots ahead of time, does anyone have any histroy of great sites at the park? Looking for any suggestions. Also, how is the hiking - decent or plain jane?

Re: Best Sites @ Pedernales Falls ????

Welcome aboard and I hope we can help you enjoy your time outdoors. Been a while since I was last at Pedernalas Falls and I can't give any site numbers. All seemed pretty nice with the best, as I recall, being the insides of the outer loop. Didn't do a large amount of hiking but enjoyed what I did. Park has a large deer population that is very evident during the week. Be very careful at night on the roads leading to and from the park. Deer have little in the way of good sense when it comes to cars and highways !

Hope you have a great trip and happy camping!

Re: Best Sites @ Pedernales Falls ????

We day tripped there just yesterday! When we camped there last fall, we got #37, 3 sites away from a bathroom. If you are in a tent, you'll love the amount of brush and trees between the sites. The 2 restrooms are on a lane that cuts thru the center of the loop. It is possible to be 5+ minutes walk from the restroom. The hiking is nice and there is plenty of space so you don't have to hike the same thing twice.

Ask for a site and change it if you find a nicer one. No biggie, folks do it all the time. We think that park has the most armadillos. If you stay at #39, say hello to "fluffy" for us.

Re: Best Sites @ Pedernales Falls ????

Howdy....I can't be of much help regarding the camping sites; I always just go to Pedernales for day trips, since I am only 40 miles from there. I can tell you a bit about the hiking, as I have done the 7.7 mile Wolf Mountain trail many times. To me, it's not one of the most interesting trails around; there is not a lot of variety to the scenery, though there are some nice views of the river valley. It's pretty much standard hill country terrain, exposed limestone surface with live oaks & junipers. Also, most of the trail is more of a road than a trail. However, the notable exceptions in scenery are along the small streams which cross the trail. The spring-fed streams support stands of cypress, sycamore, pecan, black cherry, etc. Especially nice is the section of Bee Creek just downstream from the trail. This is the second stream you cross, about a mile from the trailhead. The creek descends down a series of stairstep pools, with numerous springs running in from both sides, and a lush growth of ferns. The first time I found this spot, it seemed like the Garden of Eden to me. In late February, unfortunately, much of the greenery would not be in evidence, and I doubt that the water would be refreshing for a dip like it is in spring and summer. I'm sure it would still have a certain beauty, nonetheless. Hope you enjoy your trip

Re: Best Sites @ Pedernales Falls ????

Well, we got back Sunday from our trip. Beautiful park! Just wanted to note that I think Site #11 is the best out of the lot (which we ended up getting). It seemed to provide the most privacy and had lots of cover. It's a decent ways away from the bathrooms, but not too bad. We were originally assigned #6, but it was really rocky and not very spacious.

If you are really bored and don't mind seeing a few fat guys goofing around you can see the pictures from our trip here -> http://www.damonh.net/trips/pedfalls/2007/

Re: Best Sites @ Pedernales Falls ????

Went last week, stayed at site 39. HUGE site. The picnic table, firepit and BBQ grill are were completely shaded and screened from the road or anyone else. The tent site was flat and clear, but in line with the parking space, so not as much privacy. Close to Trammel Crossing trail to river, far enough from bathroom to avoid traffic/lights/etc. but close enough to use it when you really needed to.

Damon,
Enjoyed your pictures of Pedernales!! I like it when people take pics of their campsites so for us who haven't been there can see what it looks like!
