best places to camp in Texas
|
|
My husband and I are planning a trip to Texas, we live in Michigan and would like your input as to where the best places to camp. We would like to check out San Antonio, as I would really like to move to Texas. I hate Michigan winters. So any info would be truly apprecitated.

Since you're considering a move to San Antonio, why not check out the state parks around there. Lost Maples, Hill Country SNA, Pedernales Falls are some that you can start with. But use this site to do research. San Antonio is one of my favorite cities with a lot of pretty areas close by.

We have a 32ft fifth wheel and will be traveling the first 2 weeks in May. I love anything to do with horses, I own 1 and do alot of trailriding...but cannot bring my horse. Swimming in a lake, bike riding and possibly renting a horse are some of the things we would like to do. Seeing the mountains, waterfalls....hiking any campgrounds with beautiful Texas country would be great. Thanks alot

I believe you can set a trailer at Hill country State Natural area. Great hiking and you can see an area that allows horseback riding. They do not rent to my knowledge.
Like Todd said Lost Maples, Excellent day hikes and nice swimming at 1 mile in. Cold water but nothing your not used too
Garner State park is really nice,,,
I do not know where you can rent horses other than the chain/line rides. I am sure they are there?
Even the Blanco State park Wimberly areas are nice...Of course if you want the best of all you have Big Bend

I would suggest either Gaudalupe River State Park (Texas Hill Country and close to San Antonio) or Inks Lake State Park (also in the Texas Hill Country but further from San Antonio). Here's some references to reviews I've written on both parks:
Inks Lake State Park
Guadalupe River State Park 2004 (Part 1)
Guadalupe River State Park 2004 (Part 2)
There should be another review for Guadalupe River State Park in the files but I can't find it for some reason. It was from another trip we made there back in '03 and gives more info about the park itself. I do have it on disc and would be pleased to send it your way. Just e-mail or PM and it's yours. No matter what,
Welcome to Texas and Happy Camping!

Thanks to all for the info on camping in Texas. I am putting together a planned trip to your great state, my husband is sending a resume to the Toyota plant in San Antonio. Do any of you live near the plant? I need to check out that area too. Thanks again you guys are great!

There's not much directly around the plant, and I'm not real familiar with the area, but it will be growing now that Toyota's there. Just for reference, here's an aerial photo I took of the Toyota plant under construction back in mid-September 2005.
Justin and I live on the Northeast side of San Antonio (off Hwy 1604 & Blanco Road, the highly congested "Stone Oak" area), and my parents live on the Northwest side of town (by the University of Texas at San Antonio).
Both are good areas of town, if you don't have the option or desire to live near the plant. Property taxes and the like are much higher in the NE due to the Northeast Independent School District. Otherwise, no complaints from us beyond the usual San Antonio traffic complaints.

If you are looking to work at Toyota, don't ignore the vast areas just west of town. Castroville is a lovely community--Hondo just a little further out. Areas around Lake Medina are grand. Good luck.

As a resident of anyplace outside of the state of TX, what's the first thing you think of? Cowboys, am I right? I think you'll find plenty of horse lovers in our state. And, like Copuswalker said, Hill Country State Natural Area would be a very good place to ride. Do a google and you should be able to come up with something.
