Re: Best place to camp on the Frio River?
There are many places to go on the river. Do a search on frio river camping. It should bring you many choices. Garner, 4j, campriverview, magers, neal's, are only a few. The real problem is finding an opening. For garner, go to reserve america . If you want to be in a party atmosphere, go old garner. If you want a little more quiet, camp in new garner. I personally know that there may be two opening for water and elec. in new garner for the first four days in June. It won't be posted until late May, friends may have to cut short their trip due to other committments.

There are actually three rivers in that area: Sabinal, Nueces and Frio. If you have your heart set on the Frio, you will need to get busy as school is out soon.
You may also stay in Medina or Bandera and make a day trip of the river. One time we had to stay in Uvalde.

Neal's is a great place to camp. The tent sites aren't as nice as Garner's, but it is much less crowded. Same problem on availability. Books up fast.

Check out reserveamerica. People are cancelling their reservations like crazy. Check every day if you want to get a Garner site. Good luck

Re: Best place to camp on the Frio River?
I heard the River flow is down to 35 cubic feet per second. Does this mean that floating is impossible and alot of walking? Are there any deep swimming areas around Garner?
We usually stay @ Concan... I know for sure (from experience) if the flow is @ 35 you can't float down there. Is the water any deeper up river?
We're staying around Garner in July. Hopefully they get some rain and get the river up.
Thanks for any info available

Re: Best place to camp on the Frio River?
I just got back from Garner. The river is running low. There is alot of silt on the rocks. Need a good rain to was the rocks clean. The float in Garner has changed alot. There are new deep spots and also shallow areas. We had to walk alot (more than normal). The area below the rio frio campground is deep and the area below the dam is always deep. And as always the swimming area( the rock beach) is full of people having a good time. The construction is ongoing at the pavillion. There is a dam across the river and you have to walk around the construction site. Be aware of getting in below the construction site. There are a couple of water falls that will grab you.
If I wanted to float in the park, I would put in at the rio frio area. If you put in at persimmon hill or live oak, there is alot of walking.
The good news is that the water is still cold and the park is being watched even more than ever. We noticed alot of park rangers patrolling the grounds. Some were even walking the roads.
Garner is still Garner. Beautiful and relaxing.
Good luck and happy camping!

Re: Best place to camp on the Frio River?
We did too! Might have even run into you a time or two! My son was the one that swung off the rope swing across from the beach area about 250 times a day! Did you see all those crazy young men climbing up that tree & jumping off?!!
We camped at New Garner (Rio Frio area). Came in last Tuesday. MANY empty spots around us that didn't start filling up until Thursday. So there must be vacancies to be had. My son even wanted to stay an extra night & they didn't have any trouble at all letting us stay. We just checked the afternoon before.
I floated around; my son jumped off the rope -- so low flow didn't bother us any! Son is already begging for a trip back before summer ends!

Re: Best place to camp on the Frio River?
We camped at live oak from May the 26th til May the 31st. My guys were the ones riding around in the orange/red '72 model chevy blazer with the top off. They had a blast and went dancing every night. They are also wanting to go back in July, I believe they met some girls who are returning then. The best part for me was cheering on the crazies that were jumping out of the top of the tree.

Re: Best place to camp on the Frio River?
I made reservations for Mager River Camp June 7 but I may have to cancel due to my daughter 1st ballet recital. I'm not sure if they'll have an opening available for the 13th of July. Any suggestions on another campsite.

Check reserveamerica if you want to camp at Garner. Sites become available everyday. You just have to keep looking and be patient. Good luck on finding a spot, wherever you go.

Re: Best place to camp on the Frio River?
Im taking a trip to Texas to visit family I havent seen in a good 3 years. Im flying solo from Orlando all the way to Austin to go camping with them for a few days. We happen to be going to Garner State Park. Ive never heard of it before, and im looking around for some ideas hopefully from people my age (17-20) about what to do, where to go, etc. I love camping, so its not a big issue for me at all. Just not knowing what to do is haha.
If you can give me some advice that would be great.
I should be there June 18th-26th.
Thanks = )

Things to do in Concan: listed in order of importance- Tube the Frio
- Just sit in the water
- Snorkle (looking for money and jewelry is fun!)
- Climb the Cliff at Garner - spectacular view
- I think there are popular dances each weekend at Garner - very historic too!
- House Pasture also has weekend entertainment
- Eat at Neal's
- Eat at the House Pasture
- Shopping at the Dry Fifty and Josh's is fun
- Birdwatching
