Re: Best place to camp on the Frio River?

I agree on the oder of importance that was posted. I just wanted to add one thing. I haven't been there in 2 or 3 years, so it might have changed, but during the summer between Labor Day & Memorial Day there is a dance every night at the paviloion.

Carry on.

Re: Best place to camp on the Frio River?

I know this thread is pretty old but I'm sure it still gets browsed through along with New Frio Bounders always looking for a place to stay. Since there are often new camps, lodges, RV Sites, etc or new owners/management taking over older accommodations (& remodeling/changing) in the Frio Canyon- Go Here; it is kept up to date and gives plenty of options.

On a side note, The Frio River Area has grown quite a bit the last couple years and the crowds seem to be increasing every weekend. New places are popping up and the clear waters and hills are as beautiful as ever.

Take Care and Happy Camping..

Re: Best place to camp on the Frio River?

The current water levels are honestly pretty low, nothing like last Summer (when we had a Flood). However, people are still enjoying the water. Many are still tubing the routes and a lot are lounging/swimming at all the Major crossings.. Everybody seems to have fun here regardless of the water levels unless they are solely here for "tubing".

The beauty and serenity alone is enough for a lot of people's reason to come to the Frio. I'll be happy to report back about the levels and feel free to PM me or reply on here.

Take Care..

Re: Best place to camp on the Frio River?

Well, we just got back from camping at Palmetto State Park this past weekend, and I can tell you I liked the Frio River MUCH better than the San Marcos river that flows through Palmetto S.P....
Palmetto had some nicely shaded campgrounds, but the bugs were pretty bad. We were attacked by flies every time we tried to eat, and that did not happen at Nana's..
Furthermore, the San Marcos river was pretty bad... We camped at spot 33, and walked about 1/4 of a mile to the "best river spot in the park"... It was a low bridge over the river with a bunch of kids cooling off in knee deep water past the bridge! The water was soo low! Even being so low, it was still flowing uncomfortably fast though. Rocks in the water were bad... The worst part was that there was not much "rocky beach" for us adults to put our chairs in/ on, and just sit by the river. It was either 2 feet of water, or the shore was trees/ roots/ weeds.
Sorry to be negative again, but I was very dis-appointed and wanted to share the info/ warning about the river.
I guess that my point is that the Frio River near Nana's was MUCH deeper/ cleaner/ clearer than the San Marcos river in Palmetto SP. Also, the Frio near Nana's had 3 rope swings (none at Palmetto) and nice rocky beaches where adults can sit along the shore...
Considering that Palmetto was 70 miles from SA, and the Frio/ Nana's was 90 miles form SA, I would definitely go the extra 20 (OR MORE!) miles to the Frio instead of the San Marcos...
I hope this helps...
I will keep posting whenever I get more info to share.

Re: Best place to camp on the Frio River?

Stillinatent,

Sorry to hear about your experience on your latest camping trip, however I enjoy hearing your reference/comparison to the Frio River.

I have never personally never been to Palmetto but thank you for the review in case we consider in the future. I know I am biased towards the Frio, however it really is tough to beat the clear water, white rocks and hills here.

There is really something special about this place and what it offers. A lot of people know about it and visit, however it's just the right size where it's not too many people populating or taking away from it.

We are watching "Dolly" closely and hopefully we get some showers out of it.
