Best Mosquito Cures ???

I just thought I would get everyone’s opinion on the best cure to get rid of the pesky mosquito while camping. I’m sure a skin repellant works great, but is there something I could either burn like an incense, or is there a certain type of wood to mix in with the normal firewood that works well? I figured there are many ways to take care of the issue – just interested in getting some different opinions.

The smoke from the fire will help quite a bit. But you can use citronella incense or candles closer to where you are sitting. It has a pleasant fragrance and works pretty well.

Besides smoke from a campfire (always "a good thing"), we have found these to work well:

They work well in a low or no breeze situation and cost little at Wal-Mart.

Note: While doing a search for this product for you, I came across an article talking of the horrible carcinogens you will subject yourself to by using this product . To be honest, I figure it is no worse then the campfire and not something to worry about much (unless your going to sit in front of it and breath the smoke on purpose ). Just thought I'd let you know it is there:rolleyes:.

Happy Camping!

Re: Best Mosquito Cures ???

The absolute best thing I have ever used to ward off mosquitoes is Avon's Skin So Soft, original scent. I bathe with the soap or shower gel then moisturize with the lotion. Top it of with the bath oil spray and you'll not only smell good, you'll be mosquioe free! Safe for kids, too!

I have also read (but not tried) dryer sheets (ie Bounce, Snuggle) will keep them away. Put them in your tent and the skeeters won't go in. At least that is what I've heard.

Bring campho-phenique or menthlatum to ease the itching if nothing works 100 %.

Re: Best Mosquito Cures ???

I second RR's post about Avon's Skin-So-Soft. It's what Justin and I used back when we were heavy into hiking and camping almost every weekend, including trips to the coast in mosquito season. It didn't help much with horseflies (nasty li'l buggers!) but it was terrific deterrent against mosquitoes, for us, and it doesn't smell that bad to humans so you won't be scaring off your companions.

The other option is the have someone in your group who's a known bug magnet -- the person who always seems to get the mosquito and fire ant bites, the chigger and tick infestations, etc. That way some of the "heat" will be taken off the rest of the folks in your group.

Just kidding! (I think... hehehe)

Re: Best Mosquito Cures ???

Last Sat. we had mosquito's all over our backyard. I set up our tent (my girls wanted to camp out) & I tied Bounce fabric sheets to both zipper doors & one inside the tent. Then I taped a couple fabric sheets to our back door of the house. I never once saw another mosquito in our backyard. The fabric sheet is still taped to the backdoor & I tapped a couple on the porch pillars & still no mosquito's!!

From now on I have been tying a fabric sheet on the loop holes of my shorts & have yet to get bitten. I cut a sheet & tied them on my daughter's shoe laces also!

Re: Best Mosquito Cures ???

We had camped two weeks ago in the backyard & I still have the fabric sheets taped to my backdoor. We still haven't seen any mosquitos on the porch.

When outside I have taken a fabric sheet & cut it in strips. Then I tied it to our shoe laces. We still haven't been bitten yet. With all this rain & the rain barrells we have in the backyard we normally get alot of mosquitos but now I'm a firm believer of the fabric sheets!

Re: Best Mosquito Cures ???

I buy Bounce fabric sheets. I'm sure any fabric sheet will do (not sure if Bounce has some special formula than others??).
