Beach camping -- Galveston?

We're new to houston and really want to do some beach camping. Or basic tent camping if nothing else. I thought I heard Galveston was a go for this. Any experts out there? Or another place within two hour drive of SW Houston? Thanks tons!!!

Welcome to Wild Texas,Look under the Wild Texas logo under parks and check out Galveston State Park,The park has good tent camping and they just finished new bathrooms and bath houses. There is not alot of shade so take some.Have a great time.

Re: Beach camping -- Galveston?

Welcome journywmn,
I agree on the Galveston Island camping but again, very little shade. My other suggestion would be Brazos Bend State Park. I would imagine it would be no more than an hour away for you and they have some really nice shaded campsites there. No beaches but they do have gators. Good bike riding, stargazing or birdwatching. Good luck.

One other point on Galveston SP , it will be windy, bring something to block your cook stove burners. (And lots of lotion) a good day trip for history is the San Jacinto monument and the Battleship Texas

Agree on Brazos Bend great star shows too
