I have stayed at Galveston Island SP. You are very close to the beach there. You can see/hear the ocean waves, but you're separated from the actual 'beach' by about 150 yards? I'm not good at estimating distances. It's less than a 5 minutes walk to get ON the beach.

If you are tent camping you can do it on certain areas of West Beach. It is getting to be smaller and smaller areas as civilization closes in.
I have spent 7 weeks in the State Park this year and just returned from another trip today.
I think the park is underated. Front sites are right next to the beach and walking the beach has been great for the wife and I. We don't swim there but do walk in the water and have really enjoyed the park.
We were originally set for Dellenera due to the S.P. being full.....It was the pits in our mind. Trash and 7' between campers. Couln't even get an awning out
Fortunately we were able to not only get a refund but transfer to The S.P. as well. Had another great 4 days on the beach

At GISP you do not camp "on" the beach but the campsites are very close as happybooker stated. The row of sites (in all three loops) that is closest to the beach are considered "premium". However, beach erosion has moved the dunes/boardwalk such that they don't have fire rings anymore. Premium sites but no campfires... go figure.

The biggest suggestion that I would make (assuming that you want to have a cmpfire) is to get one of the sites that has the road between you and the beach. All of the campsites are layed out as road, covered picnic table, fire ring. Since the wind blows off of the gulf, you want to make sure that your smoke is not blown through your table area. I can't speak for the sites that are layed out with the road perpendicular to the beach.

Finally, stay away from the bay side. No wind and the mosquitoes will eat you alive.

Hope this helps. GISP is my son's favorite SP so I hope you enjoy it as well.

One thing that we have done is taken the ferry over to Bolivar side. If you go about 5-7 miles on the main road, off to your right is open beach. The street just ends and people drive on the beach. Its technically not a campground, but we have camped there and have seen others. Its great because you can camp right next to the ocean and it does not cost anything J Keep in mind its primitive. You’ll be hiking down to the 7-11 for bathrooms if you don’t bring you own.
