Any sugestions to backpacking in Colorado

I am going backpacking for a 3-4 day trip in Colorado. My partner is still a beginer, but I think I could step it up a notch with her. Any sugestions as far as scenery and great trails or parks to go.

Rocky Mountain NP - you should check it out. Lots of hiking, but it may be high-altitude. I have never been, but my brother (impossible to please) has gone 3x and is still crazy for it.

We stayed at several City and State Parks in Colorado and I was amazed that most every one had an area of each park devoted to an activity: flying model planes, birding, hiking, camping. I'll have to dig through archives and see if I can find those names of the parks.

Colorado is beautiful. It can snow on you at any time if you are high enough. We drove from Colorado to Texas in June of last year and we were in the snow.

RMNP is nice, but the crowds can get a bit much. I really liked backpacking in Colorado State Forest, which borders on RMNP, and gets you much of the scenery with less crowds (and fees--at least usta be...)

Agree that most of CO's areas are superb!

I go to Colorado every year and I never go to RMNP (it's been 12 or 13 years anyway) because there is so much wilderness area closer that's less crowded and doesn't require permits etc. I'd recommend something in the Sangre de Cristo, Weminuche, or Collegiate Peaks Wilderness areas.

Check out the Rocky Mountains forum at backpacker.com for some good ideas. Bring your ideas back here and we'll help you with specifics.

Re: Any sugestions to backpacking in Colorado

Here is what I wrote about our RVing in Colorado:

First stop was Cherry Creek State Park, just south of Denver. We pulled into this park after dark and found a spot. The next morning, we saw bald eagles, golden eagles, and red-tailed hawks as we explored the park. This was wonderful park with huge lake, wetlands, model airplane park, archery range and a marina.

As we left the Denver area on the Interstate, we were slowed by a heavy fog. Evidently there was a traffic pileup that delayed us for hours. We exited and made our way to Lake Pueblo. We stayed here for one night, enjoying the view of the Greenhorn and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges to the south and west and the magnificent Pikes Peak to the north.

Our next and last stop in Colorado was Trinidad Lake State Park. Nestled in the foothills of southern Colorado, bordered by the historic Santa Fe Trail and scenic Highway of Legends, this was the perfect park to be snowed upon. We walked around and enjoyed more snow than we had seen in Texas during the past 20 years. We decided to stay an extra night and just relax.
