Re: Any Frio River recent experiences???

We are heading to the Frio on Sunday and we have been in touch with our resort hosts on this past Saturday. They told us that they had gotten some rain the other evening, not that much, but the river is indeed low right now. That is still ok with us, some of our best trips have been low water times. It sure beats having to cancel because your campsite is going to be evacuated by the time you get there. That happened two years ago, really a downer when you are packing to leave and have to cancel.

Re: Any Frio River recent experiences???

Well Oldude51,
I don't think I can think back forty years but I can try. We met on the dance floor and the rest is history. We have liked Neal's a long time ago and of course, Garner, then River Haven when Janie Johnson ran it then we stayed at Seven Bluffs several times. For several years we have been guests (almost family) at Camp Liveoak that is about a mile past Leakey. Good little cabins that are on property that sits on the river. You can walk or drive down to the river for some good times. It is above most of the floating so you can have some pretty good uninterrupted time on the river. Now that we are older we really appreciate all the birds on and around the river. You can just sit and watch them for hours. I wish I got some of them at my house. We used to come with large groups but things change and now we go with a few friends and both of our kids take their kids EVERY year. This one we will be together and I am looking forward to that. I still think a bad day on the Frio is better than any day at home. If you check out Camp Liveoak, ask Butch or Joyce about the Polar Bear Knuckleheads at New Year's holidays.
I will follow up when we get back.

Sandy

Re: Any Frio River recent experiences???

We came back from Garner about two weeks ago. Had rain all around us while we were there. Only rained on us one day. The river is way down, but the floating is ok. Came upon one area on the river where the vegetation had grown completely over the water ( from bank to bank ). It was in Garner, between rio frio and the old bridge. ( the bridge is completely gone now, it has washed away.) We still floated every day and had a blast! Have fun and be safe.

Sandy,

That's really neat that you met your husband (if i'm reading right) @ Garner State Park?!

Last summer I actually did a little blog about good ole garner and that's something I talked about- couples meeting on the Dance floor..

"Garner State Park" in The "Frio River" Area | funrivers.com blog

River is currently low and this heat is not helping.. however as you've said.. there's more to the Frio Canyon than just tubing and there's still some good swimming holes perfect for lounging.
