    Advice for a foreigner

    Hi I'm coming over to Texas from the UK in a couple of weeks. Where's the best place for tented camping around the Corpus Cristi/ Port Aransas/ Rockport area? Ideally we'd like to be allowed fires and get a warm shower in a pretty area.

    Also, are there likely to be mosquitos/ midges or other horrible biting/ stinging insects around in November in either the area mentioned above or around Pace Bend Park (thats where we're heading first).

    Welcome aboard, Charlie! I hope you enjoy your time here. What part of the UK do you hail from? Spent three years at RAF Lakenheith (near Thedford) back in the early '70s. Our oldest was born there and we call her our English "souvenir". Even though she carries dual citizenship, I understand that no matter what she does, she will always be considered a "subject of the Crown".

    Can't help you a lot with your question. We don't care a great deal for the Texas coast and don't spend much time there. I will say that I've been to Mustang Island State Park and it is very nice and should meet all your needs. I've also heard some good words about Goose Island State Park but I haven't been there.

    November is a pretty good month for camping in Texas. The "critters" are on the decline and they shouldn't bother you a great deal.

    A word of warning about the Texas coast...Hurricane Ike left remnants of his passing all along the coast. If you plan to go to the beach, call that park directly and ask straight out "how much debris is visible on the beach". I know South Padre and the Corpus area is seeing tons of debris. It isn't a pretty sight.

    As far as mosquitoes and other insects go, they probably won't be too bad with the colder weather. Bring bug spray just in case though.

    Hadn't thought about that but 'rat is probably right. How about the Texas Hill Country instead?
