Soap Making at the Sauer-Beckmann Farm

When? 05-24-2008 10:00 AM to 03:00 PM

Where? Stonewall, Texas - Lyndon B. Johnson State Park & Historic Site

This year's events are dedicated to Lyndon B. Johnson helping to "Celebrating the Life of a Man & the Land that He Loved" in the 100th year of his birth. See park interpreters cook a batch of lye soap over an open fire and watch what happens to the combination of lye, lard and water as it turns into soap. You can also touch, feel, smell and experience using lye soap to wash clothes on a washboard as a German farm family would have done in the early 1900s. Learn other popular uses for this common cleaning product and see the historical farm buildings. It's a day to experience and compare life as it was years ago verses how it is today.
